Planning to force a toy on an unsuspecting stranger

I love that you did that! The toy is adorable. I'm so glad they put it in the cage for him. Hopefully it will give them the idea that parrots appreciate something to do.

Yay!! I'm SO glad to hear that. Also that the toy looked used :D

Are you planning more? Are you planning on eventually introducing yourself? That would take guts to do, but might be worthwhile? I feel so good now after hearing that. I bet the bird owner was really impressed by your toy making skills! :)

Michelle, I am so thrilled that they gave your wonderful toy to their bird!!! You have done a wonderful thing, and imagine how grateful he was to get that:)

Why doesn't my girl do things? She just sits. She's got lots of stuff, but she doesn't play with it.

Maybe she has to be taught how to play? Some birds never had the opportunity to learn :(. Percy also took a while to realise what toys were for when I first got him.

Can she see other birds playing? Maybe if you play with her AND the toy? Does she have a fave treat she will work for? If so, hide some in a toy (make sure she sees you do it) and maybe that will encourage her to at least interact with the toy and who knows what would happen next?

Strudel, Dominic was like that when he first arrived. He had no idea about toys. It was watching the Beaks that got him going, but he's still not all that playful when it comes to parrot toys (except for the foraging toy I give him sometimes with half a dozen sunflower seeds in it - he'll kill for sunflower seeds!). What Dom likes most is shredding cardboard. I have a wire hanging basket filled with cardboard for him and he'll sit there for hours just chomping away.

When his cage was inside, he found he could clamber right down on the outside of it and gain access to our swing-top recycling bin. More than once, I found him happily nested in the bottom of it turning all the recycling materials into confetti. In the dark. Inside a swing-top kitchen tidy. !!!

One handy thing in getting birds to learn how to chew is offering them a carrot or parsnip or the stems of celery, broccoli or cauliflower. They get the hang of chewing those and then you can add things like toilet paper cylinders at the same time. If you do that, poke a few starter holes so your bird can get a grip on it.

Thanks, I didn't want to derail the thread, it was just a plaintive lament.....

(I've tried to get her interested, but she just ignores "stuff" and comes to me instead.)

Thanks, Percy's Mum, in that case....:D

She knows how to chew. I give her hunks of veges and she eats them, she loves nuts, she just seems to be "sort of lazy". I make her foraging things, I just put her special treats in a packet or in a cardboard roll or something. She just ignores them, she doesn't seem to be interested in getting the things out. She just wants to sit there and be hand-fed. She's got HEAPS of stuff in both of her houses, but she tends to just sit on "her spots", she nevers seems to pay much attention and she hasn't really chomped all the wood things....

I think you should start up your own business making bird toys  It looks so professional!

I say do it, just put it in the mailbox and have a little note which says you drove passed and saw their bird! :)

There is someone who lives on my road, and they have a galah which is in a tiny cage on the verandah, no toys, one dowel perch and a mineral perch which is half eaten, so she is sitting on half a mineral perch and the other half is just the metal screw type thing which the stuff covers -_-

Her water was gross and only fed seed, and no idea when the last time the cage was cleaned!

Amazes me how people don't think birds need toys and they think seed is the perfect diet!

I second that. Why not leave a phone number?

As for the other stuff. Yeah, it pisses me off when I see that stuff...

Can't stand seeing a bird with green, nasty water.

I want to say: "Here! You drink that! Does that look tasty?"

What I usually say is: "Your bird is liable to get a bacterial infection from that water. Do you know how much the vet bill is for something like that?!"

Percy Momma, you are so awesome! Not just because you make incredibly cool birdy toys, but also because of the beautiful gesture you made by delivering one to a little bird who really needed it :)
