PBFD Sunny is showing symptoms

Oh Linky, I am so very sorry for your loss. I too am at work reading your beautiful words and am trying to keep it together. 2011 does not seem to be a good year for our forum family :( Your bonsai tree is beautiful and I am deeply touched of your monument to Sunny.

R.I.P. Sunny

Oh Linky....
I am only feeling a fraction of how you feel and it is already unbearable. I hope I am spelling correctly through the tears.

You did what was best for your baby.

He will be with you again one day.

Linky, I'm so sorry you had to go through this. As much as we know this was the right decision, it doesn't make things any easier. He knew you loved him and loved you back. I wish we could do more to help and make you feel better.

I can't believe that Sunny is no longer with us, whenever I speak to Linky, I cry, (sorry Linky, you know me) the worst emotional human being walking this earth.

We were never sure who the carrier was of PBFD, Sunny or Sterretjie. As you all know, Mishka and myself often visit Linky. Our last visit was the Saturday, before Sunny became part of Linky's family.

As I always preach, "RATHER BE SAFE THAN SORRY" I took Mishka to Dr Russell (same vet as Linky goes to). I was there early on Monday for blood tests to be carried out, making sure that Mishka is free from PBFD.

I would not have got through this difficult week without Linky, Von and Di. They have been my pillar of strength, when I needed it most. Listening to my fears, and drying up my tears. Always being so positive, telling me Mishka will be okay, eats correctly and is just over 3 years old. They each convinced me Mishka is 100% healthy, I believe them, but had to have the blood tests done for peace of mind.

It has been the longest 6 days of my entire life, not knowing, constantly praying.
After many many phone calls, result have not come in yet (and more tears)
I called Dr Russell this morning

THANK YOU LORD, MISHKA'S RESULTS CAME BACK NEGATIVE

I am still crying from relief........

Linky, Von and Di, thanks you always being there for me, I can't thank you enough.

Oh yeah when I called Linky to give her the good news this morning, I was in tears, could barley speak, shame Linky thought it was bad news, managed to tell her, then we both cried tears of joy. (sorry once again Linky)

Sterretjie looks just as healthy as Mishka, (a bit more cheeky I might add) LoL

Sterretjie will soon be tested, AND I KNOW THAT SHE WILL BE 100% healthy.

Sterretjie will soon be tested, AND I KNOW THAT SHE WILL BE 100% healthy.

To be honest I am PETRIFIED of testing Sterretjie.:(:( My mind is telling me if I ignore it, it will go away. It is just my way of dealing with my loss.:(:(

Sterretjie is still busy with a heavy molt and she is getting in all her flight feathers, she can already fly far but cant gain hight. I am waiting for this to be finished so that he can clip her wings and take blood at the same time. I dont want to take her twice because of her fear of the place due to the previous ordeal.

In my heart I wish that she will never finish molting.:(

Sterretjie is NOT a carrier!
And if she is ( SHE WON'T BE!!! ) she might never show the disease, and you'll still be able to keep her as a single bird!
Hoping and praying for you, Linky :)

I know what you are going through Linky..... and wish you never ever had to.

I recall last time I saw Sterretjie, how beautiful her flight feathers were beginning to appear.

I know Sterretjie is a fighter, she has proved it already, and will do so again.

We are all here for you, praying.

I know in my heart it will be good news, that Sterretjie was not the carrier.

I know now that she was not the carrier otherwise Mishka would have been sick. BUT What about the car and the ladder, any other mistakes, my made cleaning the whole house - every room - Sunny's included?:(:(:(

Linky, we are all thinking positively for you. I have said it to Ant so many times this past week and I will say it a million times again to you if it makes you feel better....

I believe that there is much not known of this disease. Of course, people must take precautions, because it is known to be so highly infectious. The extent however, is not known. As my AV points out, rescue centres have had infected birds that did not infect others. I am no expert, you know this, but it appears to me there are more than just one factor of contracting PDFB.

Think of it like children being put with other children and the chicken pox virus. I avoided it twice before I actually caught it the 3rd time lol.

You just never do know. Maybe the "concentration" wasn't high enough for another bird to catch it? Sunny was so small..... Maybe Sterretjie's immune system is strong enough to withstand it? Maybe the stuff that Dr Russell gave you has taken away any possible risk?

We all wash new toys we buy for the fids. People buy second hand cages/playstands/toys and scrub them with vinegar and boiling water for over an hour. Is this enough to wipe out PTFE if the previous bird died of it and we only have the previous owners assurance that the bird did not? One thing is for sure, this disease is not as common as one might think and if it was to prevail so violently, I'm sure a lot of members would have lots of experience.

I have been trying to find a case where wild birds have been found to have had it in large numbers in areas where birds are still wild caught for pets....I haven't found anything yet but they all flock together of course??

I'm not disputing that this horrible affliction is not disturbingly deadly and causes so much pain and heartbreak, but I am saying.....not enough is known. They are trying to create a vaccine in Austrailia where it is said to be first diagnosed and they are struggling. I would bet this is because amongst other reasons, the contagiousness and the strenghs are not known.

We won't know until the results until you take Sterretjie, Linky, but you know we are all here, all thinking positively and as Ratzy said, even if our girl has contracted this, there is nothing set in stone she will not live for many many years with no ill effects. They have found this with older birds before now.

Rooting for you with everything. I know you've had the worst time ever this past couple of weeks but honey, just a little bit more and I'd bet that things will start looking up.

There are single PBFD birds living wild in flocks here in Oz ( mostly galahs and sulphur crested cockys ). The flocks have been tested and only a few came back positive, mostly negative, even though they live in close proximity to each other.

Thank you Von for your encouraging words, it really brings me back to reality. My brain tends to stop working properly when it comes to my own problems.:(

We have a huge problem with this disease in SA and it is busy destroying our already endangered Cape Parrot. Here is an article about them but be warned it is VERY sad.:( They must still test the other Cape Parrots and I pray to God that they are ok.

I've just read this thread and like everyone else, tears are flowing. Gawd ... Sunny was such a sweetheart. But you know ... we say this about Bernese Mountain Dogs (not a long lived breed) ... "If they're not with us for a long time - they're here with us for a good time..."

I think about all the animals out there in human hands -- some living very long, lonely lives. They exist but they do not experience love.

Take heart Linky - Sunny was a bird that put a whole lot of life in a very short time.

Now that I have messed up my keyboard worse than Ozzy ever could... :(

Omg... I just read this Linky! Im so terribly sorry!!!! Im at work right now with eyes full of tears. It wasn't easy when I lost one of my birds I hand reared as a baby. I rescued this crazy dog that was very ill with giaradia. My parrot escaped his cage and jumped towards me. I just clipped his wings a day prior. I was cleaning cages when he escaped. That crazy dog ran so fast and grabbed him right infront of me and he died in my hands. I cried for weeks. I had him"cracker" for 7 years since he was a baby. He would of been 10 years old now. He lies in my garden now. Ok I can't talk about him no more. I can't be crying my eyes out here at work....

Re: PBFD Sunny is showing symptoms..how is he now/

Here is the latest photo of him. I'm telling him that at this rate he will be kaalgat / naked before Feb.:) We'll have to carry him in our pockets otherwise he will be too cold. The feathers are becoming more and more bloody.

He is however playing, climbing and trying to fly all the time. He is making the cutest baby sounds the whole time, talking and talking.

Hi elie, so sorry to hear about your birds condition, please get him to the vet a.s.a.p.

I pray your African Grey has not got PBFB, lets not jump to conclusion, the vet will run certain tests.

Please do read this thread right from the beginning, it is to long and complicated to explain in detail.
Unfortunately Sunny had to be put down, he was suffering terribly.

Please keep us updated
In my thoughts and prayers
