Ona’s Thread

Why is she like this? :ROFLMAO: I secretly love it.

Sound on!

Very similar to how she rubs her beak on the back of laptops. Anything with a smooth, metallic-like surface she must rub her beak on!
Oh she's so sweet, and those BIG eyes looking up for approval, I'm melting over here! 😍

I've been getting into "bird fever" mode and keep thinking about getting another bird again 😬😬😬 Still very unsure about that idea but it's been crossing my mind again!

Aww that video is so sweet!

If you get another bird would you get another green cheek? Cant go wrong with that!

That would be my first thought since it would probably be the highest chance of getting along with Ona. Idk though I'm interested in other Conures too. However Ona is a tiny girl still, only 62 grams, and I would be nervous about getting a Conure too much larger than her for safety reasons. I'm not going to lie I've still been thinking about that poor Turquoise GCC with half a missing tail I saw at PetsMart.... :( If I DID get another though it would probably be safer to get one from the same place I got Ona so I could visit it as it grew just like I did with her.

The thing is, if I knew Ona would enjoy another bird I would do it in a heartbeat. But right now she lives a very spoiled, privileged life and spends most of her time out of the cage with/on me. I would hate to be in a situation where that is ruined for her if she didn't get along with another. I do think she shows some good signs of being interested in other birds. When she sees or hears my backyard birds outside she gets very excited and seems interested. She doesn't mind me playing videos of other birds for her to see or hear. I just don't know. I've also though about trying to foster a bird so I can see how she would react. But that is harder to come by.

That would be awesome if you could foster a bird, then you’d know of she at least can get along with other birds.

Aw, she is a tiny girl. Maybe a very tiny species like a painted conure? Though I think they’re pretty rare.

Ona likes the outdoor birds? That's awesome! My crew is a little... different about that. Avery seems slightly curious, but doesn't like to be close to the window unless he's in his cage. Baxter is just Baxter. Does her thing and doesn't pay any attention to what's outside. Tucker, well that's a whole different thing. He's my active flier, and loves to land and sit on the window sills. Buuuuuuuuut, he's absolutely not a fan of the wild birds out there, and get visibly upset with their presence, and screams bloody murder until they fly away, or I go rescue him and put him on my shoulder, his tree, top of his cage, a chair... anywhere that isn't the window. 🤣

She does seem to like them! When she hears them get loud she excited screech calls back at them. And when I take her out in the sunroom and she sees them on the bird feeder right out the window she makes her little happy "pur" noise.

Geez Tucker, lol! Really that upset at a tiny little outside bird, huh? :ROFLMAO: He's like "this is my turf!"

I wouldn't get another bird if I were you. You and Ona are so lucky. You adore each other and spend lots of time together. So many people get a bird hoping to get one just like Ona but get something different
Less tame, less loving, less clever, more nippy, more noisy, etc.
Any time you spend one on one with a new bird will take away from the time Ona gets with you because there are only so many hours in a day. I don't think Ona would want to share you with another bird.
The only other type of bird I would consider if I were you is a male cockatiel because they're small easy going birds.

I agree that the downside of getting another bird is possibly having to split time but getting a cockatiel would most likely further decrease the chance of One getting along with a new bird.

My tiels are not fans of Tom or Tony, but especially not Tom.

I love your videos!! Interestingly enough, Lovejoy exhibits a lot of the same kinds of mannerisms, exactly the same type of "skritch me please" behaviour, aimed at both Val and me :) and the "must eat the wall" thing. And I don't think I ever realised how tiny she is, she is JUST SO SWEEEEEEETTTT!!!! 😍

Are Lovejoy and Ona secretly related?! Are they both some weird Conure/Lori mixture in spirit?! 😱

Yeah, it's probably hard to tell in photos. And I do have kinda small-ish hands so she probably doesn't seem as tiny on my finger without anything else to compare it to. Honestly she's not a whole lot larger than a bigger sized budgie if you don't count her tail length. But she does have to train with the "small" Aviator harness and not the "XS" because her head is too big for the XS, hehe. I'm still waiting to see if she will grow more since she's about 15 months old now. I am guessing she will always be more on the smaller side for a GC. She's been holding steady at 62 grams for a few months now.

The only other type of bird I would consider if I were you is a male cockatiel because they're small easy going birds.
I don't have anything against Cockatiels at all but I've just never been super drawn to them the way I am to Conures or some other species. I just love that quirky Conure personality.

Yeah that's what I don't want. I can't even imagine telling her she has to go to her cage now so I can spend time with another bird. I would really only want it if they could both be out and happy at the same time :/ Which is no guarantee. I seriously just need a "bird trial" 😆 Anyone wanna lend me your bird for a few weeks so I can see if she likes it? :ROFLMAO:

Sure, take Tom! 😆 Though, he might like Ona so much he’ll never want to leave!

Weeeeelllllllllllllllll my vet did say he's seen a few pretty wild lorikeet hybrids out there, though all with other Australian species so I figure a lori/conure hybrid would be less likely. Doesn't mean a red-blooded lori rooster wouldn't give it the old college try, though!! ;)

And Ona is so much smarter than most other birds. She knows her colors!

:D She is indeed such a smart girl. I love training her. I definitely am not discounting how special and awesome she is when I talk about other birds. She's my bestie and my #1.

Oh my gosh I just found the BEST bird sitter for Ona!! We just met her. She works at my local avian vet and is finishing school to be a nurse there. Ona LOVED her. She flew to her multiple times and landed on her shoulder and even called after her when she left the room! I mean she does love everyone but even I was impressed with how quickly she just loved her.

We will be gone 12 days in October and Ona would stay with her. I’ve been so nervous about it but I feel so much better after that meeting. I can tell Ona would be ok there. Heck she even said she would walk Ona in her backpack.

Edit - forgot to add - when we first walked in she said “Oh I remember her from the clinic. She’s the one who was saying “step up” all day.” :ROFLMAO:
