Not again. I'm super stressed.

Thanks guys. I was at a really low point this afternoon. I'm in better spirits now. PinkBirdy, we do know a little bit more, but none of the puzzle pieces fit together for any real diagnosis. For now the vet is going with a GI infection. My vet is extremely good, so if he says this is a puzzle, I believe him. He's been in practice as an avian specialist for 30 years and says he's never seen anything quite like it. He trains other avian certified vets (Dr. Exotic from the Animal Planet show trained under him). He's stumped and doesn't know what else to do.

So I'm going to keep with the treatment plan. He ebbs and and flows as far as progress. He did perk up a bit once I finally got a decent amount of formula in him. He's still sick, but I'm not so hopeless now.

No real change today. He got a full 10mL formula feed this morning since he was down to 130g (vet wants him no less than 135). He's not really eating on his own, and even refused peanut butter cookies. Sigh. He does perk up a little bit when I take him out of his bin and put him on my shoulder, but then he gets too cold after about 5 minutes and has to go back under the heat lamp. I'm just going to keep formula feeding him until he either gets better or dies, however long that takes.

I'm cautiously optimistic today. He ate a fair amount yesterday afternoon and his weight was good, so I didn't give him formula. Then this morning his weight was a little lower, but he also had a couple massive poops in his bin. I gave him fresh food and gave him some time to eat on his own, and he did, bringing his weight back up to where it was last night. He's been nibbling off and on all day. He's eating mostly "junk", but like his vet said, it doesn't matter what he eats, just as long as it's calories. He's mostly eating birdie bread, which is good, but he's also favoring seeds and goldfish crackers, which aren't so good, but whatever, it's calories. This gives me hope, though it's cautious, because he's seemed to be on the mend two other times, then tanked after a day. But I'm still hopeful.

Excellent news considering Leo's recent history! You have resolved to provide great support care while acknowledging his precariousness. I admire your tenacity and hope so fervently he rebounds to normalcy!

Thanks for the update!

I just caught up on all you and Leo have been through. How are you? You have had so much going on plus the ups and downs of caring for a bird with a serious illness. You ARE doing an amazing job. I hope Leo is finally on the mend.

Look who's gone all day without formula and actually weighs more tonight (by 2.5g) than he did this morning!

I don't want to get to excited, but this is a lot more improvement than the other times it seemed h was getting better.

Just read this thread tonight. I'm so sorry you've been going through all this Beatrice. However, I'm really happy to hear that he seems to be finally on the road to recovery! Must've been some tenacious bacteria! He gets Goldfish crackers :D how cute.

My Pois and I love hearing about Leo. Robin and Griffin send well wishes to their "cousin" :). My guys are both puny compared to Leo lol.

Milestone indeed! Bathing is a good sign, and he looks really nice in the scale pic. A few more encouraging days and Leo should be on solid footing!!

Thanks guys. I really want to get excited, but this has been such a roller coaster I just can't quit holding my breath just yet. Scott, yes, I think a few more days and I might be able to actually exhale.

I'm so glad Leo is doing better! You've been doing wonderful BeatriceC. Keep improving little guy!

My heart is still in my throat. Obviously we all want Leo to recover, but after losing my Kono so recently to her mystery illness I'm just so emotionally attached to your situation right now! When I saw the bath video I started to giggle hysterically and my husband demanded to know what was so funny. Nothing funny; I'm just so happy!
