Hi there

My name is Lisa and I have a African Grey Barney who's 6 years old, when we first had him at 16 weeks old he was clipped which has caused us huge problems, when he freaks he flies into the wall, he's really timmid, doesn't like strangers, although he loves me he doesn't allow me to handle him how id love to handle him, especially when I take him to the vets every year for a check up ........I worry about trying to get him in his cage that much, I hardly sleep. Dont get me wrong when he's tired he loves to cuddle up in my arm while I kiss his head and stroke him,but he's the type of bird that is scared of his own shadow. Id love to hear if anyone has a simalar grey! Although he doesn't talk he really is a placid grey, when myself and my husband r in the house barney is always out, however if me and my husband are in the same room he's happy and will go and play or sleep in his cage .....even though its left open.

He has started to get a little better when we have visitors, I lock him in his cage when they arrive and that way he sees they aren't going to hurt him, then after they have been here a while I open his cage and he waddles out to have a look. I honestly don't think he will change or ever talk but as long as I can stop him from being frightening that's all that matters to me

Xx

Hi Lisa and welcome! I don't have any advice about your Grey, but I'm sure that some other folks here will be able to help you out. I'd love to see pictures of Barney:)

Welcome to the forum!!!! Do you know if something had scared him when he was younger????

Hi there
I can remember my husbands friend came to our house when we'd only had barney about 5 months, my husbands friend has a very loud voice, he was showing my husband something using his hands and barney freaked and flew into the tele, he has always been wary of strangers but he got worse after my husbands friend came, thats y its always best for barney to be in his cage when visitors first come then I let him out when they are sitting down, he is a lot better than what he used to be like.

Howdy! Glad to have you here! Training a bird takes a lot of time and patience. Remember they are very articulate on picking up on your body language. Make sure you bird buddy has a place where he/she can feel secure. Do your research here and good luck!
