I recently rescued a 4 yr old B&G the info I was given is we are the 3rd home for him and his 2nd was apparently a 4 week bad experience. We have had him now for 6 weeks he steps up easily and is easy to move from his cage to his play stand but does not want to be touched at all .He will bite growl and lunge at you at any attempt to touch him he seems to be happy he talks pretty well but I have also noticed he gets very irritated at his toys.at times just could use some help want to do anything I can to make him more comfortable Thanks

Awww Sounds like he sure has had some bad past homes...I feel so sorry for the ones who are ending up in such bad places, I Wish I had advice on this but I don't...I will pray for him to warm up to his new home and see life not always gonna be bad for him. N he has new loving family: )

Patience, you are already doing well. When I got my amazon it took over 3 months to step up.
Keep building trust!! After the trust and bond is there he will probably love scritches. I say probably because some birds dont like it. Take your time, you have a long time together ahead of you.

Like Sandy says! It takes time and patience, don't be expecting to be able to touch or pet the bird right away. IF he lets you pick him up, I would say he wasn't abused too badly as he was trained rather well by whomever that trained him to begin with to step up for people. A abused bird would be in really bad shape, trust me....you haven't seen a badly abused bird that is absolutely terrified of everything, even a human presence. They tend to take their frustrations out on their toys, that's pretty normal to me. Just take your time and he will trust you enough in time to touch him. Whenever you try to touch them, make sure they are aware of what your doing before hand. If you do it when they don't realize it, you most likely will get bit.

Macaws remember their bad situations for a long long time. My B&G Kayko was an abused bird I got at the age of 20. He has warmed up to where he will gladly sit on the arm of anyone, but does not want anyone to try to pet him. Naturally every little kid wants to do this, so I just tell them that he thinks they are the mean old trimming lady. He is getting better as I sit with my Scarlet on my left knee and Kayko on my right and do simultaneous head scritches. He sees that the Scarlet is enjoying this and it has softened him a bit to me rubbing his head, but he is still fearful of strangers. Clifford the Scarlet still will yell "Get In There" in a nasty tone that he picked up from his first 7 months in a pet shop. We have never said this to him, but he certainly has not forgotten it in 10 years. Clifford wants to have his head rubbed and flip him upside down and play with his feet. Doogie my Catalina wants to wrestle all the time and we head bob with his beak clamped around my finger. You have to find little things that your bird will like. Some birds want you to rub under their wings. Some like a good shower. You need to see what your bird likes and do it. They are all highly individuals

Members have given you great tips
Birds have incredible memories never forgetting anything especially the bad ones.
Let him come out his cage when he is ready and willing.
Continue giving him lots of love and attention, be very patient and understanding.
