My Cockatiel is bleeding and might die. Please please help me

I'm surprised no one has brought this up (or maybe I missed it??) But with a head injury there is a high likelihood that your Cockatiel does not have the strength to eat on his own and/or is in too much pain. Get food into him via disposable syringe asap!
In my (limited) experience, birds that keep their eyes closed constantly die within 24 hours. Please get food into him! Use warm water to make a thick soup, you don't have to boil it.

I'd say post pics on here if you think it will help. Find a way to get food into him

they did tell me to do that. but someone also said not to force feed him which is making me helpless. Kai will not open his mouth and i don't think its by choice. I think the blood dried and just closed his mouth if you guys know wat i mean. What should I do? How do I open his mouth?

Poor baby... Hope I don't get blasted for saying this, but if he is suffering have you considered putting him down?

Ned, I don't know all the right answers (wish I did!) and without xrays we really are just making stabs in the dark. His jaw could be broken. Maybe it's just too painful to open his beak. Maybe it's something else..
Personally, if it was me I would try feeding him. I wouldn't cram it down him because he could inhale it by accident and contract pneumonia. I'd put just a drop at a time into his mouth.

The pic I attached (hopefully I did it right) is of a disposable syring with a curved tapered tip.. I thought maybe in this case it would be helpful since it comes to a smaller tip than regular syringes that are used for vaccinating animals. Maybe something like this would be easier since you wouldn't have to open his beak much.

Like I said, I personally would try feeding him.. if he continues to go without food, his organs will begin shutting down and he will die. As far as the dried blood holding his beak shut, I don't know about that either. Would it be possible to used a damp Q tip to gently clean it off?

I'm so sorry this happened. What an awful place for you to be, desperately trying to save your bird but feeling so helpless at the same time :-(

SoCalWendy, I was thinking the same thing. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is end their pain and suffering. It's a difficult choice..

It is the most heart wrenching choice any pet owner ever has to make but if it ends unnecessary suffering, it must be done, however difficult.
That said, wouldn't the vet have suggested it if he thought it was hopeless?
Keeping you and your little one in my thoughts, Ned!

Did you know that there was another cockatiel named Numnums that hurt his beak, but now he is better. So your bird will get better too. I will pray for you.

It occurred to me that the bird might not be able to handle seed which is why I suggested the syringe and a powdered pellet paste. Just didn't spell it out :) Ned, boiled water which has cooled is better than warm water from the tap- safer. I think too, that you need to clean the dried blood off, especially around the beak, very gently with boiled, warm (or lukewarm, that is blood temperature) water and Q-tips (cotton wool sticks). I'm getting worried that he hasn't had any food and not much water in 48hrs, he really needs some sustenance. The eyes aren't so important at this stage, but by all means gently clean around them, too.

Make sure the vitamin solution is weak- overstrength is worse than none at all. If you can't get parrot pellets, a possible substitute might be baby food- it's already pretty mushy, one of the oatmeal or cereal blends with vegetables might be the go.

I'm not the praying kind, but you're still in my thoughts.

Ned, is Birds anywhere close to you? Sorry, I don't know much of the cities in Saudi Arbabia... :(

I wish you and your boy best of luck.

Good find! Ned is in Jeddah like this place is.... this might be the place he took his bird to already, but he did say they mainly did cats & dogs so maybe not. If you scroll down to the bottom of the page it says Copyright (c) Jeddah Veterinary clinics 1967! (that's not the Muslim calendar, either, it's 1435 this year). Strange.

This place would have parrot pellets and more specialised food for parrots, too, one would imagine.

Can I find those disposable syring in pharmacy?

I've been doing the damp Q tip since yesterday, not much luck there.

Thank you, I boilded the water and made the formula but his mouth is still close. I made the solution weal, thank you for the tip.

Hi Ned!

I am so incredibly sorry your sweet cockatiel was injured. This is day #3 without food or water for him. :(

I mean this in the nicest way possible. Please, do not let him suffer.

Yes, those syringes can be purchased in a pharmacy, but you'd have to force the beak open so he can get the nutrition. And without x-rays there is no way of knowing how severe the injuries are to his head. Are you willing to forcibly open the beak, not knowing how much pain your bird could possibly be in????

It is in my city and the nearest vet clinic to my place that I know of, thank you so much for looking it up for me. That's the place I took Kai too on the day of the accident. I don't know if the dr is good or bad, but I didn't like him honestly. Today a friend told me about a place thats really good with birds so now I'm just trying to figure out how to get some money. All wat I saved was spent on the vet, and the food and vitamin.

Yes thats where I took him. BTW I'm a 'she'. My friend gave me an address of a clinic that has an avian Dr! Insha'Allah I'm taking him tomorrow.

Ned,

All of my prayers and best wishes for you and your Teil. You must get some food and water into her. Best of luck at the vet tomorrow!!

This is so random, maybe, but I'm sooo happy right now! I've been broke since this Saturday and the money my parents gave me was all spent on Kai's visit to the vet and on his food and vitamins. Today I just remembered that I have money in different currency's! I have never viewed them as 'real' money so I never thought of using them. I just finished converting the few pounds, euros, and dirhams I have and its 300SAR! (80 USD) Meaning Kai is going to the avian vet tomorrow!!! Wish him luck and keep him in your prayers or thoughts.

Awww, I'm so glad for you! I hope the avian vet gives you good news. You're in my thoughts. (Hugs)

Am praying that you get good news from the vet tomorrow. You and your little feathered friend are in my thoughts.

Ned, sorry I didn't see your question about where to find the syringes until just now. Pharmacy might have them but I got them at my orthodontists office. Check with a dentist if it's possible, otherwise the vet should have something that will work!
Good luck with your Cockatiel! Keep us updated :)

I must admit, I thought you were male, from your nick... "Ned" is a diminutive of Edward :) Not that I thought your name would have been Edward.... All my "hes" referred to your bird though.

I hope your "tomorrow" is now "today" as it will be three days without sustenance for your poor bird. Fingers crossed, the vet visit goes well.

Kai passed away this morning before I could take him to the vet.
Thank you everyone for your support and help.
