Hello, New to the board but have a question you all may be able to help. I just got a scarlet macaw 3 weeks ago from a friend. She is 4 months old. When he brought her to my house I noticed it had a crooked beak. OK I can deal with it with beak triming it is not bad at all. Then about after an hour I noticed she stood crooked and was a little splay legged. I brought her to the Vet and got the beak trimmed and he to stated something was not right. After taking x-rays we discovered it had a severly crooked back.

Has any of you experince this?

Welcome to the forum!

I've never had any experience of this but there are many knowlegable people on this forum and I'm sure they will be able to advise on your little girl.

How did the vet say this would affect her general health?

We would love pictures of her - we adore them here!

The stated that her life can be shorten due to the genetic problems she has had already, also she feel off her perch 3 times so far so I lowered her perch, I do have pictures and some pictures of the x-rays, I will get my wife to download them so I can post them.

That would be wonderful. I'm thinking some of the Mods may have had experience/knowlege of this.

If she's having trouble with balance, then maybe ledges would be better than perches....?

Welcome to the forum.;) Ah the poor-poor bird.:(

I know that this can happen when the mother was calcium depleted. They usually correct the problem while the baby is still very young. They place the baby in a special splint or saddle to help correct it. When they are still young they are like play dough.

You really have a special little bird there and I am sure he is going to require lots of special attention. It is sad that the breeder did not bother to help him while it was still possible.:(

Sorry I have nothing to add, as i am still learning-welcome to the forum and good luck with your new baby!
