lory/lorakeet

I'm guessing they fall into the "other" category. If the mods feel your post would be better suited for another forum they can always move it too.

You can go ahead and ask right here! What's your question?

Im wondering if theres a good page for general information. If anyone here has them, hows their noise level? Are they a good bird to have with kids?

Our main goal was to find a bird for our kids. We started with a cag, pretty much because we fell in love with him, and knowing he would end up being our bird more than the kids. He loves the kids, gives them kisses and such, but hes really not a bird they can handle. Then we found a sun conure, and he is like the jack russell of birds, extremely loud, tempermental and overly excited. I really feel bad because he doesn't seem happy. I dont know if its the kids or noise or his previous home. :( im going to try rehoming him with someone who has a quieter home without small children. Then we have a quaker who is great, but immediately attached to my boyfriend and its hard for anyone else to get near her. So...im looking for a bird that will be more open to the kids, and playful. The kids are never with any of the birds unsupervised and there are rules when around them that they are very good at following.

Thanks!

My Black Lory is nice to everyone!!!! But his screetching can be very high pitched and it can make you go deaf for a bit. He will scream by your ear sometime. Lory are very playful birds but mine don't play nice with other birds as they're solitary birds. They're diet specific and requires liquid nectar diet and fresh fruits and veggies with nectar sprinkle over it. They make a lot of mess!!!! Liquid diet cause liquid poo and it shoots out like a squirt gun, believe me when I say it goes everywhere....they love to play so they need a pretty big cage. But we love ours dearly....

Yeah. Ive been doing a lot of reading. I clean house daily, including cages and floors, so that would be fine. All our birds talk and screech if they cant see us, thats fine. Its the whole day i cant handle, lol. Theres a post on craigslist in my area for a rainbow lorikeet with several cages and playstand and 5 month food supply, but 600$ seems a bit steep when i found a breeder selling them for 300. Am i being unreasonable or is 600 good?

$600 is a bit high but mine is $500 from any breeder you look up and that's how much I paid. Most people don't get what I mean by messy until you see it for yourself. LoL....They're really wonderful birds and we love ours dearly and wouldn't have him any other way. I would highly suggest you hang towels around the cage and leave front open. Carpet floor is not a good place, keep the cage on tile floor and laminated floor is best!

We have tile through the whole house. :)
I asked him if he would consider 500 for the bird. Guess we can hope! I saw her and just fell in love though. Of course id want to meet her and make sure she feels the same!

Thanks so much for your help.

I would have to caution you in regards to purchasing a Rainbow Lorikeet. Especially if you have young children. I would never recommend them. They are very much like sun conures. Can be extremely bitey & very aggressive. That said i have come across a few that are sweet.

If your children are under 10 years old I would go with a cockatiel, they are very forgiving little birds & are great for children to handle. I would source out a young male.:grey:

They can have territory aggression yes! Their bite can be pretty nasty. But the Lory I've encountered so far have been extremely sweet!!! I just fell in love with Lory and Lorikeet after being around them many years ago. Almost got one 4 years ago after I visited him at petco for over a year, the week we went to pick him up he was gone, I was so upset. Then last fall we got Malachai, one of the sweetest and craziest bird I've ever owned ....lol.....

Mikey I have seen some beautiful natured, Black Caps, Red Lories, and Dusky Lory to name a few. I just thought i would warn that Rainbows can be very nasty & unpredictable..

I would have to ask why this bird is being rehomed. It could possibly have a great nature but then again it could be quite nippy.

I have had Lorikeets in the past because of their aggressive nature i sold mine. I couldn't in all honestly tell customers that they make wonderful pet when i didn't feel it was totally true.

Pedro, I agree with you there. Just so far the ones I've encountered were nice. :)

I would have to say it's up to the person purchasing, i prefer to give all the pros & cons & then the final decision is up to the buyer. I agree there are some really well behaved Keets out there.

That said a lot of our parrots aggression is human taught & i am afraid once that happens the owner doesn't know how to fix it or reinforce better behaviour.

I agree with Mikey & Pedro that Lories can be quite nippy & very messy. Any that I have dealt with were. For children, I always suggest Budgies & Cockatiels. They are very calm natured, easy to handle & train, have small beaks for bites, and are very interactive. Plus, they don't come with such attitudes as the bigger guys. Little children love little birds. Please don't automatically discount these little angels. They can be such loving friends.

I very much wanted a Rainbow Lorikeet after seeing one in person. The research I did was exactly as Pedro says; aggressive and nippy. I already had Rowdy who can be a handful, especially when she was young. So I decided not to go for it. I'm sure I could have dealt with it, but I guess I decided I didn't want to, especially with as many animals as I had then. I had 5 horses in training, 3 dogs, a ton of cats, 2 goats and 2 pigs.
