i was just looking at some classifieds and i came across kakarikis, which i'd not heard of. i did a search for them and they sound lovely birds.
does anyone here have experience with one of these?

kakarikis are great little birds, come in a variety of color mutations, speak pretty well for a small bird, I'd probably recomend a male as females are prolific egg layers, even with no mate they'll continue to lay eggs, they are somewhat short lived compaired to their larger cousins, with a lifespan of about 7-10 years, for the most part they are very messy eaters, they enjoy sifting through their food spraying it about, if that works for you then a kakariki is a great choice...........

thanks.

the birds in the advert were selling for $80, which isn't a lot of money.
i don't know if thats a fair price for kakarikis or not though.

i just read that they are smaller than a cockatiel, which is surprizing.

i've lived in nz on three occasions and i've never heard of these birds before. i talked to a friend of mine earlier today who is a nzer, he said he's not heard the name either, perhaps they are known by a different name in their own country?

Could be they are referred to as simply Parakeets? In articles I googled they are often referred to as New Zealand Parakeets.

One of the most amazing parrots I have ever seen a doco on is the New Zealand Kea. There was a doco a few years ago that asked if these were the most intelligent of all parrots because of their abilities to see complicated tricks once and solve them after the initial parrot worked it out. They also work in teams to solve bigger problems like moving bricks off the top of rubbish bins so they could open the lids. Amazing birds!

From memory.
Yellow tuft on head south island, fairly rare.
Red tuft more wide spread and not so threatened.
Funny enough today I was talking to someone who thinks there are some flying back and forth to the mainland from Motuihe Island, Auckland, where I understand D.O.C. have released them. How long ago I do not know.
Sorry to say I have not seen one in real life, that I can say look that is a Kakariki.
So cannot comment to much on size. We have a Lori, I think it is a musk, that people mistake for one. Which could mean they are just a bit smaller than a good sized Cockatiel.

does anyone know of any breeders around the orlando area for kakarikis?

Can you please help me? I have a kakariki who is very sick. He can't move his legs and sits in place. He is on antibiotcs now but he is not getting any better. PLEASE HELP!

Are the meds vet prescribed? Antibiotics can kill the good bacteria as well as the bad. Give some yogurt to get the good bacteria and make some high protein food to feed!

they are great birds not to noisy and verry curios and funny we have 4 adults 2babys and of all our birds they are my favorite but dont tell them that they can be messy and males talk but females are more affectionate

Hi sorry to clash but I just came across this site whilst looking for information on Kakariki's. I have two and they are the funniest little birds. They are very inquisitive and get into everything they can do. Mine are out of the cage all day and love flying around and investigating. When hand tame they can be quite affectionate and will land on you and walk about you exploring and even picking moles and little things they assume should not be there. Anyone looking for a small but entertaining bird, I would sugggest to get one. We have just got our second and are just biding our time whilst our first gets used to her which I am sure he will in time.

Messy
