Kakariki pulling out females feathers

Hi there. My name is Janine. I am new here. We have 2 very cute and wonderful birds. Kakariki birds. They are still young, under 1 year. They started mating. The male that I assume is on top, pulls out the feathers of the female at the bottom. She really looks scruffy. I feel so sorry for her. Is this normal, what can I do. Please help
