I was actually thinking about giving him a money order for that reason, since I don't have a bank account, although since he is being nice enough to allow me to make payments on them, I thought it would be more convenient for him if I gave him cash. And I figured, even if I give him a money order, technically that doesn't prove anything unless it is in writing that he is asking x amount for the birds and I payed him so much of that amount. So I guess I will just give him cash and ask for a receipt and maybe see about writing up a quick agreement. Even though it won't be notarized, it still seems better than just hanging on each others' word.

I think that's the smart thing to do, just write something up and both of you sign it.Give him the money and you keep the "note".Next payment you both sign and so forth.

I hate to be negative but a note/letter u both sign will mean nothing if it is not noterized. Even ebay will not honor it as prof of sale. Get a money order or a check that u can make a copy of as prof. Better safe then sorry. If he has a business then he can give u a proper receipt. Just would hate to see u get burned.

Could you get the whole amount from somewhere, so you could just pick up the birds, when you paid for them...

I always have moneys on hand for emergencies, and I would just dig into that.

Why is he letting them laying eggs if he's moving in Feb? I would be weary about giving him a deposit....BUT IF my birds were on eggs, no I wouldn't let strangers go in as they WILL freak out!!! I would tell him that you want them for sure if you've made up your mind and tell him when they're ready to give you a call to pick them up.

I would also type up a letter spelling out the arrangements that you both sign each time you make a deposit, with the amount of the deposit written down each time as well. That would probably hold up in small claims court if it came down to that. You will also want to keep the bank receipts for each time you make a withdrawal (or use money orders if you don't have an account). My Nanday's addiction to Judge Judy has taught me a few things, lol! She always asks for proof of withdrawals or payments.

You guys have been such an amazing help, I don't know what I did before I found this forum :) To answer the questions previously noted, he seems to be pretty networked with other bird folks and breeders, and while I'm not sure, I get the feeling that he is going to be selling/giving the babies to another breeder when he leaves the state. But that is something I am going to ask him about. I'm pretty good at nonchalantly getting information out of people so I'll try and get a better idea of what's going on tonight when we go to give him the deposit. When we were there the other day we got a ride from our room mate since he has the bigger car to fit the cage we were picking up. He is not really a bird person and he stayed out in the car while we were in talking to the guy, and at the time, we were just being sociable, we only had intentions of buying a cage off the guy so I wasn't really to concerned about what his plans were.
Now that we are actually getting birds off of him, I'm going to take my time a bit more, I'll make sure to ask him the same questions, just worded a little differently, just to make sure I get the same answers, that kind of thing. He seemed like a pretty honest guy, I don't get any weird vibes from him at all, it just seems like he went through a bad divorce and wants to make a change in his life.
I'm having a friend of mine go along as well, she is a reptile person that newly acquired a grey and is just starting to realize how awesome birds are :) But I also figured, that's one more set of eyes that's there to verify exactly what's happening.

I also wanted to note, the pair of zon's we are to be getting aren't on eggs, it's his other birds, they just all were in the same part of the house together, he said he will bring the zons upstairs so we can meet them without disturbing his breeders.

Just got off of the phone with the guy, we're going to see them at six tonight :) And he said that he would give me a receipt and everything. I'm so excited :) I'll take my camera but I don't know if I'll get any pictures or not. Oh I wish we could bring them home tonight! Soon enough....

I want to ask him if he has a nestbox he would sell me but I'm having a hard time figuring out what kind of box they need. There isn't much info on red loreds as far as breeding is concerned. I've found some things that say a wooden box, some say metal, some say grandfather style some say boot style and the dimensions vary greatly. Any of you zon folks have any advice? I know this isn't something I need right away but if he has one he would sell me for a decent price, I'd love to get it now and save a couple bucks. But it's pointless to buy one in the attempts to save some money, only to have to replace it because it's not the ideal kind.

Just went to see our new babies! And we are in love with them. We got to see all of his other birds and oh my! were there a lot of birds. There were about 10-12 macaws, 2 ekkies, 1 grey and 2 cockatoos. It was loud! Funny enough, the zons weren't making much noise the entire time we were there, even when we were in another room and they couldn't see us. They are actually in a decent sized cage, it could definitely be bigger but they seemed pretty content in it. They just sat snuggled up against each other at the front of the cage where they sat and talked to us. It was so sweet to watch how they acted together, the way they would give each other kisses and rubbed their heads together. The only bonded birds I've ever had before were budgies and tiels, so this is kind of new for me. I was happy when I saw the cage though because they were in the cage we just bought from him for our conure in the pictures he sent me. The female has a little bald spot on her breast where there are new pin feathers coming in. I asked him if she plucked them or if the male did it and his response was, "she's moulting." Although I have never seen a bird develop bare spots while moulting, I did take notice that they were being fed an all seed diet, very heavy on sunflowers and nuts. I actually took notice that all of the macaws had nothing but sunflowers in their dishes :( So, the first thing we will be working on is getting them switched over to pellets and fresh foods. Everything went pretty well, they both seem great, and apparently he has watched them trying to breed already but he just refused to give them a box, oh and he is giving me a nesting box for them as well :) That made me feel a little more hopeful when it comes to breeding them.
They don't have names so that's something we're going to work on. I can't wait until we can bring them home, I think they are going to love it here, where it's quieter and they will have some actual company, rather than being in a noisy basement full of macaws and cockatoos. We will be picking them up as soon as we pay him the rest of the money, which will be next friday at the latest, I hope it's sooner though :)

I'll be glad to sent you plans to build your own if you wish,SO handy at all he can do it.All of my zons use this box, even breeder birds that came with the metal boxes breed great with this cheap ,easy to build box. I'm old school and use plywood boxes.Cooler in summer and warmer in winter, i get 3 yrs out of them and throw them away, only cost about 10$ to make.

That would be great! I actually used to do quite a bit of woodworking myself, I used to build custom reptile cages, so I'm sure a box should be a cinch. The one he is giving us is one of the grandfather type boxes. I know that nest box size and shape can make a pretty big difference so I just want to make sure we have the most appropriate one. Trying to increase our odds as much as possible, I think it made me a little weary when I read that the red loreds are one of the harder species to breed in captivity so I want to do everything as perfect as possible. If you don't mind, you could email me at [email protected] :)

I'll be gone fishing for a few days and will email you when it get home.

Oh My! that's so exciting for you... Can't wait to see pics...

Hey Wolf, i sent you an email, let me know if it makes sense.

Thanks again for the nestbox plans Henpecked :)

I have to get ahold of their previous owner tomorrow and confirm with his schedule but we are aiming to pick up the zons this friday :) I'm so excited, can't wait to bring them home.
It's kind of interesting, Ziggy has always been a pretty quiet bird, she will yell if she can't see me but that usually stops after a few minutes. She does talk some but it's usually fairly low volume, kind of mumbly and only if she's alone or if it's just us with her. If we have anyone over she acts like she doesn't know how to make a noise lol. But the last few days I have been watching a lot of amazon videos on youtube, out of boredom more than anything else, and she has been talking a lot more! She just spent the past hour jabbering to herself and in a louder volume than she usually speaks. I have a feeling having this pair around is really going to bring her out of her shell. The main times she talks is when we are watching a movie or tv and it's up kind of loud, it's like she wants to talk but she doesn't want us to hear her lol. Maybe when we bring these noisy guys home she won't feel the need to be so private. ;)

He is actually selling all of his birds, and I think he has sold them all locally already.
