I think Rosie's sick

Sorry this took so long to post, I took my mom to her doctors appointment and didn't have time to post before I left.

I called the vet this morning and they were full today, I was able to schedule Rosie for 10:30 tomorrow morning. She seems to be doing pretty good right now, she's active and not as sleepy as she had been. Every once in a while she seems to get that same look again, but still no more clicking which is good. Hearing it that one time was enough.

I know they say cockatoos live a long time . But Rosie is a little older. My Older birds sleep more [especially in the heat]. If her droppings are good [and shes eating ] no weight loss . I hope its just the molting thing [its such a long process] .Good luck with the vet.
She is sleepier in general, especially compared to Kenji. She'll sleep in until 9am some days and she takes naps through out the day. I have no idea how old she really is, except that she's 21+. I don't think she's lost weight, her weight fluctuates between 270(empty)-300 grams(stuffed full of food).

my heart dropped when I read this Ashley!....any time I hear about breathing, quieter than usual and nippy it could be an upper respiratory infection.

labored breathing and clicking in my birds indicate air sac mites, but I am only talking about canaries and finches...

highly doubtful she has that but it could be anything. Thank god you know her soooo well, and noticed right away.

I will keep you and Rosie in my thoughts, and wait to hear for some results....
That would be terrifying if she had air sac mites D: Her breathing is only slightly harder than normal, I'd think if it was air sac mites it would be much more labored. (Just trying to be positive lol).
I'm really happy I noticed her acting so soon soon, the rest of my family thinks she looks fine, but they don't see or interact with her on a daily basis like me.

Brucie had single clicking and slightly 'harder' breathing and he was cleared up with a course of antibiotics, hope its that straight forward for you both. Good luck and keep us updated! X
I'm hoping if there is something wrong it's a simple straight forward fix

Bella had this too, it was an upper respiratory infection, though with a bit of antibiotics she was fine! :)

Keeping Rosir in my thoughts!
It's really nice to hear about people having similar situations with easy fixes :)

I'll be keeping you and Rosie in my thoughts!!! I know how much she means to you, and I want to believe that she's ok and she'll be fine! But knowing her history, I am worried about her!

hugs and scritches from my flock to yours!!!!
That's how I feel, I want to hope for the best but her past makes me worry.

Good luck with the vet tomorrow Rosie! <3

I'm keeping you and Rosie in my thoughts. Hope all goes well this morning.

Ok I just got back, it seemed to go pretty well

I talked about all the things I've been seeing, her vet thinks that it might just be because Rosie has feather dust now. Before she didn't, and when they have feather dust it can bother them sometimes. Kenji also adds to the amount of feather dust she is exposed to. In the test that only took a few minutes she said there is a little bacteria, but not enough to make her think there is a infection. Sometime next week the rest of the tests should come back and give us more information, but as of now she said Rosie is looking really good(for her) and doing so much better than the last time she saw her.

The bad things were

  • Her calcium is low
  • Her bad legs foot is slightly swollen
  • Her blood is super thick because her hemoglobin is very high, but this is not new.
  • Getting fat deposits, and developing a new tumor on her lower keel
  • I have to completely remove grains from her diet(except what is in pellets)
The vet also thinks her estrogen levels are super high, and that is the reason she has no feathers on her sides and under-wings. She said the estrogen is stopping feather growth and she believes the follicles are fine. Once it is lowered the feathers will start growing in again. She offered to give her a hormonal shot, but I said I wanted to try lowered her hormones naturally first and she strongly agrees with my decision.

The big thing the vet really went over is that Rosie can't have grains, she thinks that is what is making her calcium lower, the carbs turning into fat deposits, and making her estrogen levels high.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with the results so far, just hoping the rest of the test come back good. I feel like a great weight has been lifted off my chest. It would have been great if everything was perfect but we've never had perfect results before and I don't expect that. Her vet really thinks that removing grains will make a big difference, in a few months we'll see if things look better.

Here she is waiting in the examination room for the vet

I'm so glad the Vet visit went well and you can breath a little easier. There is no worse feeling in the world then waiting on test results when it comes to our fids. Keep us posted and you and your sweet fid will me in my thoughts and prayers.

Whew, Ashley, I am SO relieved to hear that Rosie isn't ill. I can only imagine how heavy your heart must have been feeling.

Look how pretty and patiently she was waiting to be seen - SUCH a good girl!! :)

She will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers that the other results will all be in normal ranges. More HUGS for you!!! :)

Definitly, as soon as the test results come in later next week I'll let everyone know.

I took three videos while at the vet, not during the actual examination, but while in the waiting room, waiting for the vet in the examination room, and after her examination.

So glad she's doing ok.. <3 I heard Jacob click when I first got him too just a couple of times, and Ihave reptiles when they click its also URI so that's when I ran him to the vet. However same thing, feather dust, not uncommon at all apparently. He said that if clicking occured more regularly that then I should worry more. a click here and there is normal.. I hope the test comes back negative and what a knowledgeable vet you have. Mine is really good with reptiles and he's an avian specialist but I've never needed to utilize him within parrot situation yet I hope hes as good as yours.. I was very impressed with that!
