I need an escape proof cage

Shrunken Macaws... that's interesting!! I'll have to look into that just because I'm curious now haha. Why are galahs different than other toos, I wonder?

Calmer. Quieter. Less exciteable. Less hormonal. Less prone to plucking disorders. Less likely to become screamers. Less tantrum prone...

Other than that... nothing really comes to mind! :D

Best pet quality too out there... by a mile!

I would love an RB2!!! I'd take one of those in a heartbeat... if offered, and I had the room, and the time, which I don't. (So please don't offer.)

Maybe there's hope for my cockatoo dream after all haha... in a few years...

Look at their shape. Look at their pair bond behaviors. Look at their tails. Look at their flock structures. Look at their feisty playful nature. Look at how closely related their DNA is....

Conures and macaws are very closely related.

That's so wierd, I would never have guessed they would be anything alike!

There is actually a breeder out there that has been successfully cross breeding sun conures and Hahn's macaws...

Apparently some species of conures and macaws are so closely related they can cross breed!

This is from Wikipedia on the close relationship between the species, all these species are classified in the same scientific category as close relations:

In this scheme, "conure" comprises members of the genera:

Aratinga
Pyrrhura
Nandayus (now an Aratinga species)
Guarouba (Queen of Bavaria conure or the golden conure as it is sometimes called)
Cyanoliseus
Enicognathus
Leptosittaca
Ognorhynchus
Conuropsis
Rhynchopsitta: thick-billed parrot
Myopsitta: quaker parakeet

Macaws:

Ara
Anodorhynchus
Cyanopsitta
Diopsittaca
Orthopsittaca
Primolius

Readers digest version: ALL conures and ALL macaws are genetically related.

Is crossing species really a good idea?

OMG Karen -I'm sorry but I couldn't help but laugh at Zoe's recent accomplishment lol that's one way to get mom home!! [emoji57]

And yep- Galahs lure you in with their cute looks and snuggles... At one point I said cockatoos weren't for me, and look what happened lol

Hahaha! Wow, I can't imagine coming home to my birds set free... I can only imagine how Zoe looked when you opened up the bathroom door.

Cockatoos, unlike amazons and macaws, DO NOT generally warn before they bite...

Neither do Sennies... or ringnecks.

Personally, I like to know in advance...

A conure is really just a shrunken macaw, you know. If you can read and handle a conure, you should be able to read and handle a macaw.

(UNLESS YOU SHOW FEAR. Then the macaw's gonna own you!)

I also agree about the fear thing even regarding conures! Avery bullies my boyfriend when I have her out, because she knows he doesn't like dealing with her bites. If she's out on the bed with us, and he's laying down, she'll slink towards him until he jolts up to keep her off. She'll continuously do it and bully him until he's had enough of it, haha! She knows I don't put up with it. If she wants to get into a nice snippet with me, she gets her little face cloth towel (it's so great that they're small in that regard!) and is placed in her cage until she calms down. So they're few and far between. And she is easy to read except during hormones... I know when I'm going to get bitten with her.

Thankfully my ringneck doesn't bite! He just beaks. :) But unless you knew him, you'd never guess when he'd strike.

You do realize it's because of your pics with Chili that I'm saying that. Just thinking about those pics melts my heart. She's precious!

The males establish the nests and protect the territory.

These behaviors are all related to territorialism...

So that explains why in certain species the male (or female in some species) are the dominant and more aggressive ones.... But how about those species in which there aren't as much of a behavior difference between the sexes? In those species does that mean the male and female both share duties pretty equally?

So what kind of cage are you supposed to have to contain a BTM??? What kind are you looking into?

Karen, I'm so sorry, but I couldn't help laughing at Zoe's reign of terror. I feel bad that your son was helping out and got bit for his trouble. Even sweethearts like Zoe have a bratty day occasionally. Thanks for the giggle.

With eckies its the females...

Name me one species of bird on this planet whose gender role is not defined by nature...

If she is on eggs and she leaves the nest her babies die...

If he doesn't bust his butt foraging and promptly return home to feed her, they all die.

They GET that concept, perhaps better than we do...

Your perspective changes when one of your primary roles in nature is to serve as a food source for other living things...

And don't think for a second that they're not smart enough to realize that...!!!

Its why they are easily terrified at times...

We're not looking to buy another one yet, just trying to figure out how to keep her in this one.
