African Grey Parrots
Hello everyone,

I need help purchasing an African Grey Parrot. Does anybody know a reliable breeder that I can contact to buy this pet. I am scared of scammers out there.

Your assistance will be very much appreciated.

My full name is Emmanuel K. Mbobi

My warmest regards,

What country do you live in? It will be hard for anyone to help you unless we know. We have members from all over the world.

I live in Ohio in the United States of America.

That helps. I was messaging with a member from India this morning about a sick bird and many people there don't have access to avian vets.

There are a few people that post frequently who are also looking for African Greys. They may be able to help you.

Finding a breeder can be hard when you don't know where to start. You may have to travel to another State to get a baby African Grey from a good breeder. If there are any Bird Fairs/Expos in your part of the country you should try to attend one. They are usually held in the warmer months. A lot of breeders exhibit at these shows and many bring birds with them. It's a good way to meet breeders in person and ask them about their breeding operation and the various birds they breed.

To find a bird fair/expo within a reasonable distance from you do a Google search for bird fair expo and you will see quite a few organizations have them every year. I got a weaned baby goffins cockatoo at a bird fair/expo in Pomona, CA many years ago and these fairs are still held all over CA. Midwest. You CAN get quality birds as Bird Expos or from breeders you meet at bird Expos.

Contact the North American Parrot Society. Your region (Ohio) is Region 3. Their website has contact information for the Directors of each region. They may help you find a reputable breeder.

Local certified avian veterinarians may know of local breeders.
You will run into scammers that take your money and but are not breeders, have no birds and never intended to give you a bird. Red flags are bargain prices for baby parrots. No one sells something of value like a baby parrot for very little. Personally, I would travel to meet the breeder and meet the baby bird before agreeing to any money exchange. I wouldn't ship a baby bird, though people do it. I would try to find one within a days driving distance, pick up the bird in person, and drive back home with him.

Do NOT adopt a baby parrot that is not weaned! Handfeeding is difficult and dangerous if not done exactly right. Baby parrots can die quickly if hand fed incorrectly. A reputable breeder in the US will not sell an unweaned baby. It's done frequently in Southern and far east Asian countries but many babies die.

I wish you luck.

Thanks for your response. That really helped. After your email I found that there are a couple of fairs/Expos in Ohio and Pennsylvania. I will be attending the one in Pittsburg PA next month and the one in Ohio in May. Thank you for that tip. I really appreciate it.

My regards,

Emmanuel.

I was looking online and saw that there is a breeder of African Greys in Long Beach, CA called The Feather Tree. I looked at their website and I think they are legitimate breeders. They ship all over the country. I'm not recommending them specifically or recommending shipping but I think you should check them out. A lot of breeders are in CA and Florida. If I wanted an expensive parrot that was hard to find in my area I would consider flying to the breeder and flying back with the bird in a small kennel in the passenger compartment.

I also found a thread from 2013 on these Parrot Forums discussing The Feather Tree's owner, Steve Garvin, and the people who posted said that he was a reputable experienced breeder and one had gotten a green cheek conure from him. I think it's worth contacting them to find out.

I second the advice about contacting local Avian Vets for breeder suggestions. You will need to find an Avian Vet anyhow, so you can research both at the same time :)

Don't forget exotic vets. They're not avian but may be in touch with sellers.

There is a breeder somewhat near me who has an excellent reputation as far as I know. I have never personally dealt with them but know people who have. Don't know if it's ok to post contact info here so PM me. Be prepared however $$$. They do ship.
