I am in the beginning stages of getting a Sun Conure.
Hello!

I am new here, so I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself and why I’ve joined.. I do not have a bird yet, but I am here because I am very interested in bringing home a baby Sun Conure.

My name is Brittany, I am 30 years old and live in Levittown, PA (Close to Philadelphia). I have a two and a half year old daughter, Sophia and a 7 year old English Bulldog, her name is Zoe. I have always LOVED animals, I’ve had a number of pets over the years – cats, dogs, hamsters, chinchillas, ferrets, and chameleons. I have an obsession with Disney World, and it’s gotten worse now that I have a little girl. I also enjoy tanning and if Sophia and I aren’t watching a Disney/Pixar movie, we’re watching The Golden Girls!

I started to fall in love with birds (specifically parrots, small birds scare me) when I worked at PetsMart as a Pet Care Lead (I was 19 at the time). My favorite animals to take care of and spend time playing with before the store opened were the parrots. I used to walk around doing the morning routines with a Sun Conure or African Grey on my shoulder, whichever we had at the time, just so they could be out of the cage for a few hours.

My fiancé and I had talked a few years ago about getting a Sun Conure, but we lived in an apartment at the time, so we didn’t want to disturb the neighbor downstairs (we actually liked him). We live in a single family home now, so we have lots of room. and if our temper tantrum-ing toddler can’t be heard by the neighbors, I’m certain a bird won’t disturb them! :)

I found a baby that I would like to bring home, but after reading some threads here I’m afraid that I don’t know as much as I thought. The baby won’t be ready until the end of the month/beginning of next month so I have some time to study up.

I have questions, but I’ll find the appropriate places to post them as they come up!

Hello Brittany and welcome!! I just turned 29 so we are very close in age.

I love Suns! They are very popular and many members here own them so you will be sure to get an abundance of knowledge and wisdom from them. I owned a Jenday conure 15 years ago (they are very similar to Suns) and he was the best. Sadly I had to go to college and had to rehome him. I wish I would have waited until I was settled and living in my own home before leaping into parrot ownership. '

Suns are curious, affectionate and bubbly parrots. They will want to be with you all the time and have a tendency to be clingy and love attention. They have very loud screeches but it is something you grow accustomed to. Be sure to read all the threads in the Conure subforum, you can also search specifically for sun conure threads by using the search tool.

Again....welcome!

Hi, and welcome!

Already, I like your style! Researching, reading, and reaching out BEFORE you get a bird... you're doing it right!

The SEARCH tab above is a good one... tons of great material!

I'm glad you're here.

Thank you!! :) I’m familiar with the Jendays as well. We had them as well as Green Cheeks, but the Suns were by far the most popular. I’m really looking forward to meeting new people here and learning about my new baby. Sadly, I went to put a deposit on him tonight and someone else already paid for him. I’m on the waiting list for the next batch.. that just means I have more time to get my house ready!

Thanks again!

Thank you! I definitely want to make sure I’m prepared for this! I’ve learned some things already that I would have not even thought about before bringing a baby home!

Thanks again! :)

Welcome MissBritt , so happy you joined us. :)

I'm also a complete Disney Freak!! We used to go every year for my son's birthday. How better to celebrate his life than Disney World. ;)

I also researched parrots for years prior to getting Levi and only realized I still had so much to learn after joining PFs. I learned more joining this forum than any books and or videos I studied.

Best of Luck on your Sun Conure journey.

Hi, welcome to you! FYI, I work almost every other day at Disney World!

Thank you! :)

What do you do there? My sister in law works at Splitsville and she also works at Universal! We just bought into DVC at AKL (resale) and I’m super excited!

Thank you so much! I’m so excited to have found this forum! :)

That’s awesome! It’s such a magical place! We plan to go yearly now, we took out daughter this past September and it was so special to see things through her eyes!

I am Mr ibm, I look for dead bodies under the raised floors! I used to work under the parks, but security changes ended that!

Welcome and be welcomed. Just be forwarned, Sun conures can be LOUD , especially considering their size. Loud and high pitched, so some folks cant take it. And like most conures, they can be bitey if they are not bite pressure trained. But, they are beautiful parrots, no doubt. Love to be on and with you, especially if you are their person. Brings me to another point. If you can, let the parrot choose you. Meaning if there are 6 Sunnies in a clutch, see if one jumps up on your hand or comes to you. You have been chosen. Make sure the bird is fully weaned onto regular food ( pellets, or chop, or other healthy foods). Also ask if the bird was abundance weaned, not force weaned. If you have a breeder near you it pays to visit them , price might be better then pet smart or other box store, and you might have a larger selection of young parrots to choose from. Good Luck!

Oh yeah, about Disney World. If you can, go the week after thanksgiving, the park is EMPTY, I mean really EMPTY. No waiting on rides , most you can just stay on and go again. THe Mon, Tues and Wend after Thanksgiving. We went and it was so empty, you could ask to ride up front with the engineer on the Monorail. Again and again. So remember those days. After Wend, the park give a discount to Fla residents and is back up to full capacity. Good Luck!

Welcome to the forums, Brittany! I like your style - open to research and willing to plan in advance! We'll likely have answers to your forthcoming questions!

Welcome! I have a Sun Conure and he's the most wonderful person I've ever known. He is loud sometimes but it doesn't bother me personally but some people have been to my house and twitch in pain when Ollie does a contact call. Be warned that they require A LOT of attention and if they don't get it they can easily become habitual screamers and that leads to rehoming. I'm pretty sure Sun Conures are one of the most rehomed birds because of this reason. When you 1st get them home they will be quiet for a while but then they will open up and get louder and more vocal and will not be quiet just because your child is sleeping or whatever. I joke to my husband that I hope no one is keen to take a nap at our house lol. I hope you can handle it because they are wonderful!

Thank you! [emoji4] I know how loud they get. That’s why we decided against getting one a few years ago when we were living in an apartment! Now that we have a detached house, we figure the only people he will bother would be us!

I will definitely have to work on the bite pressure training, more so because of my two year old. She loves animals like I do, and she was so excited to go see the baby birds on Saturday. She actually remembered the store, when we pulled up yesterday she called in the Bird House!

I will say, even though I worked at a PetsMart years ago, I was not looking to purchase from there now. The store I was at is called Bird Paradise (I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to name it, but it looks like there have been many posts about it). On Saturday, there were a total of 6 babies, 4 were already paid for.. When I went back last night to put a deposit down, they were all sold. Needless to say, I’m now on the waitlist for the next batch and hopefully will be the first one to be called so I can do as you suggested and let the baby pick me. They allow you to put down a deposit to hold the baby, and will not allow you to take it home until it is fully weaned. I trust that they know what they are doing.

Thank you! That is great to know, actually! Thank you! The last time we visited, it was the week of labor day and it was super slow. It cleared out even more towards the end of the week because of Hurricane Irma. It was nice not having to deal with such crazy crowds. We always go when the Halloween Party is happening (it’s my favorite) but I’d like to go during the Christmas season at least once to see the decorations.

Thank you! Yes, they are amazing and beautiful! I worked across the street from my home, so I will have an hour in the middle of the day with just the Sunny, and then in the evening we will all be home so he can socialize with all 3 of us. We do not do much on the weekends, either so there will be plenty of playtime then as well. I am confident he will get a lot of love and attention from us. I’m not worried about the noise, I think my toddler might scream louder than any bird can! LOL!!
