Help cleo dying. Blizzard = no vet

Something is wrong with my kakariki she is so hyper and crazy and all of a sudden she is at the bottom puffed up and really weak she couldn't get to water I had to lift her!!!! Could she be laying an egg or something? Idk what's wrong with her and idk how to tell if it's maybe an egg? She is laying at the bottom puffed up idk what to do she looks like she is dying!!!!!!! Like really bad she can't even lift herself and we are having a blizzard I can't get to a vet!!!!

Oh no, this seems serious. Is your vet available by telephone to give basic assistance? I recognize the professional hazards of doing so but the blizzard is a dire extenuating circumstance. Can you very gently feel her abdomen and/or observe whether the vent is at least slightly dilated?

You may have to very carefully rely on folk-medicine advice given the near paralysis of NYC.

I hope Cleo recovers quickly.

I had to lift her to water she is wobbly idk if it's broken leg or an egg or if she ate cage lining (there's a big rip and pieces missing she dug it up with her foot). Idk what to do I put water on the ground and put a towel around her. Her breathing is ok and she can't bend her neck and all its just wobbling possibly hurt left leg I notice that's the weak one she couldn't get to the water with and its dangling thru the cage bars right now on the floor...also has 1 bent tail feather but she always had disheveled tail feathers cause she's always hyper. So idk what to think!!!

I'm so sorry Rainbow! I wish there was more I could advise you to do, but for now I would get her into a "hospital" box with a soft towel in the bottom so she can't injure her leg anymore by having it hanging between the bars.

Warm and dark is usually best to keep them calm.

I am so sorry to hear this! Make sure she gets enough water, and yes, as Scott said, try to get a vet on the phone immediately. Keep her on a towel or flat surface so she doesn't fall. Try to keep your emotions level, she can feel that you are panicking and that might increase her stress as well. I wish I could help more. Please let us know how she is doing?

It's both her feet it's like she suddenly can't walk she just stumbled and falls, she won't eat or drink what I put directly in front of her she keeps stumbling to her water dish higher up even if I put one in front of her

Everything is shutting down/shut down because of the blizzard so I can't leave no one is on the streets cause the weather is multiple feet of snow. I hate this she just falls trying to walk

Get her into a warm box, an aquarium with a heating pad covered by a towel would be great, keep the humidity up. You don't by any chance have activated charcoal do you? ACTIVATED CHARCOAL: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions and Warnings - WebMD here's a link with a short explanation on what it does. We've used it with great success on our animals, if she ingested something toxic it may help. We had a lamb eat some weeds that had been sprayed and he was down, weak, NOT looking good. We gave him numerous bottles of the activated charcoal and he did end up making it and being completely fine, we also had a dog get into rat poison and she was the same way but with activated charcoal she pulled through.

Is her vent swollen and distended?

I can't really tell I flipped her over and don't see anything unusual she's in a box lined with a blanket and towel and food and water

Are you keeping her warm? If she is weak already and inactive her body temp will go down unless you have her on a heating pad or something. I've never had a hen get egg bound but I've been told that keeping them warm and the humidity higher may help pass the egg.

it doesn't feel like it's by her vent it feels like her stomach but now I think I feel an egg and she's laying with her legs out and her butt in the ground. She just woke up and is trying to eat i put Gatorade and vitamins in the water and food and she is trying to have it and she's like pretty shaky but she's practically sitting her butt down on the ground like I said.. I think it IS egg bound??

Since this is a difficult emergency situation and you are unable to get to the vet I will tell you an old-time breeder trick that will sometimes help an egg bound female pass the egg. Boil some water and put the water in a bowl get under a towel with her so you can make sure the steam is not too hot, this is crucial! Just hold her above the steam again I cannot stress enough you do not want it too hot but you do want it giving off some steam. Don't try to palpitate it or any thing like that, if the egg breaks inside her it is fatal. After you need to keep her warm so she doesn't chill after the steam.

I am so sorry this is the best advise I can give under the circumstances. I have seen this work on cockatiels and other smaller parrots. I am not a vet and I cannot say for sure if this will work or not but under the circumstances it can't hurt and it's better than not being able to do anything.

Are you interested in contacting an online or telephonic avian vet advice service? I did some quick Googling and came up with this: http://www.justanswer.com/bird-vet/ I've had no past experience with this or any online service, and cannot objectively rate the veracity of remote diagnostics and therapies. The pic you posted of Cleo suggests imminent distress, and given the NYC blizzard and dearth of options you may wish to consider something extraordinary.

EDIT: I've heard of the technique posted by labell - may be worth a try.

Omg I'm so sorry to hear this. If she seems like she's getting worse, just plop her under your shirt so your body temp keeps her warm. Your presence will comfort her...especially if she can hear/feel your heartbeat. If nothing else it will give her comfort and security in this time of need. Your body temp will be warm enough. If it really seems like she's going downhill, just log off and hold her and give her your full attention. So sorry

These are options as well.

• Place the bird into a steamy room, such as bathroom with shower on until the bathroom mirrors and windows steam up. Desired temperature: 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit / Humidity: 60%. Place bird on wet towel. The warmth relaxes the hen so that the vent can dilate more allowing the egg to pass.
• A warm water bath can also be of great help (shallow water, of course, you don't want to drown the hen). This relaxes her muscles and often the hen will pass the egg into the water. Make the water as warm as you would like to take a long soak in.
