Parrots
Blue-Throated Macaw
Hi everybody!

My name is Mark from central Florida!

Iā€™ve just recently acquired my first large parrot, a 5 week old baby blue-throated macaw. Really a dream come true! Iā€™ve joined the forums to seek advice and ask questions as I raise my new baby into what will be my life long companion.

I have experience with several species of small parrots, including lovebirds, budgies, a Senegal, and a myriad of others while working for a local pet shop for a couple summers, as well as having the privilege of working with raptors and birds of prey.

Iā€™m very excited to be the proud owner of my first large parrot, and working with my very own macaw. And a blue-throated at that!

I hope to learn much, and be of some help in what seems to be a great community here!

Congratulations! Need pictures and lots of updated,! Only question , why bring home one so young?

There will be many pictures, I can assure you of that! :)

As to why I chose to bring him/her home at such a young age, itā€™s because of a few different factors. I very much enjoy hand raising young birds, I like the experience of watching them grow and develop, and the bond formed during the imprinting process, and Iā€™m having some problems with my back and am laid up on the couch for most of the day, so having the little chick around to watch, take care of, and enjoy gives me something to do in my down time, and raises my spirits.

Macaws also sell very fast in my area, and I saved some money by purchasing him/her young. So that was a small factor too, I can put those savings towards a nicer cage, toys etc.

Welcome Mark and baby. It would seem that you are experienced with 'baby needs' so well done. Are you awaiting a 'sexing' to name the baby? Any names picked out for precious baby yet? And....remember to post pics please...

Hi Ellie, thanks for the welcome. Yes awaiting to have him/her sexed before choosing a name. :) None picked out so far yet, for now we call him/her ā€œbutterballā€(after the plucked turkeys) or squawkers. Lol

Awwww, baby Butterball is sooo cute. :)

Thanks Ellie, he is, and he grows overnight! Yesterday he was bare faced, and today his beard feathers are showing!

Where is a good place to host images to post them here, that doesnā€™t cost a subscription fee, and wonā€™t put a huge watermark on it like photobucket? >_>

Welcome, Mark and Baby Butterball! He or she is absolutely adorable, congratulations! I like your idea of bonding with your new companion while you heal and Butterball grows. Looking forward to seeing this journey unfold.

I think a lot of our members use Imgur. I heard some people have gone back to Photobucket, Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s free. I use SmugMug and I really like it but they do charge a small fee.
