Hello All
I just read somewhere that Raisins and dried fruits are dangerous to birds. The parrot mix our pet shop gave us has raisins dried fruits and dried chilies , Are any of these things harmful to birds? Because our Conure :orange: has been eating this for the past 5 days

My Zon has all these things in her Mix! She especially loves dried Red Chillies and the fruit chunks :)

i think its to do with the preservative they use, its even in human grade dried fruit, think antonette posted about this awhile back

Thank You , The mix does have a few pellets but our sun conure just breaks them all the time im not sure if he actually eat them lol :) Oh and I found a piece of dried red meat in the Mix , Im assuming that i must take out ?
THanks

I think what their talking about is sulpher that they use as a prsevative to kep the color in dried fruits. If you go to the health food stores you can b uy unsulphered dried fruits .they aren't as pretty but better for the birds. I would think the fruits in the bird mix are the unsulphered kind Alison and sweetie pie:D

When purchasing dried fruit and nuts PLEASE ALWAYS READ THE LABEL
BUT be weary, not all suppliers are honest and some of the preservatives are not printed on the labels.

All dried fruit and nuts are preserved with Sulphurdioxide.

I was in the dried fruit and nut business for 14 years (still am part time ) Many pets shops want some fruit mixes etc from me BUT with no label stating what preservatives are used.
I therefore do not supply any pet shops knowing they are being dishonest and know how bad it is for a birds health.
