Diagnosed with Bird Lung Disease

I'm glad things seem to be going in the right direction and that you've decided to keep your fid with you WB, keep the faith, and keep us posted on your progress....God Bless :)

Congrats! I am so glad you are able to keep your bird! And, yes, asthma does get worse as the years go by. I am now on a preventive (Advair) and it works wonderfully 99.99% of the time so I don't have to use the albuterol all the time as I had to in the past. Have you tried Advair?

Russell is such a lucky fella, having to stay with his mommy, and not to be parted.
I am so happy that things have turned out the way they have, you are definitely blessed.
Keep the asthma under control, stay healthy.
We are thrilled you are finally back with us the "bird crazy family"

This!! I am also on Advair and have been since I was 14 (I am now 21). I used to be in the hospital all of the time for asthma, so much that I had to withdrawal from school and get my GED, I just wasn't getting much of an education. It turned out that it was the mold from my school that was making me so bad, and now I'm in college, but I still can't be without my advair. My doctor's have tried to get me off of it a few times, but each time I get severe, so I guess I'm just gonna be on it forever. It is a fantastic drug though! I hardly ever need my inhaler!

I realise that this post is a few months old but I just wanted to share my experience.

I have recently been diagnosed with Bird Fanciers Lung too. I have nine budgies and have only kept birds for about a year and a half.

I am told by the doctors that I have to get rid of my birds but I cannot see myself doing this!

We have purchased an air purifier and bagless vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter and have changed my bird-caring routine dramatically in the hope it helps.

They wont test me for anything else now they know I have birds which is very frustrating as I think that my lung problems reach much further than this.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear this, I am the OP on this thread and I plead for you to get a 2nd, 3rd, 4th opinion if necessary. If they won't test you for anything else I suggest you get another healthcare team, that sounds ridiculous to me! There is a chance they are right but what if you find out they aren't like in my situation, asthma unchecked is NOT fun. Please Please Please get a 2nd opinion.

Be well.

I will have to see about getting a second opinion but I am not sure that our NHS (national health service) is very big on this!

Did your asthma improve over time?

i have asthma too and its chronic asthma, not acute. i worry every day the birds will make it worse, especially with tiels, but they dont bother it and im not on the controller meds (advair) its too much money!!! my trigger is cigarette smoke. its what caused my asthma too. i grew up breathing in second hand smoke. by chance, have you? could be very well what caused the asthma if you werent born with it... and could be whats triggering it. being around the trigger of asthma is not fun at all :( i hope the new move for you helps clear it all up :D

in regards to the answer on the above post... it depends on the person i think. no, it wont go away, theres no cure for asthma. but if you know your triggers, just avoid them. makes life a lot easier. i cant breathe when someone even smells of smoke :( so i avoid smokers and smoking areas and im fine. maybe you need to find out what causes it if you have the chronic form. acute is the tricky dangerous one that can be unpredictable.

I was just diagnosed with this today. While my pulmonologist isn't 100% sure the birds are the cause, there's little else it could be. She wants them gone ASAP, so tomorrow, Chloe (CAG) and Dexter (Quaker), are headed to my parent's house until I can find them a permanent home. I'm so upset about this. I'm not going to permanently rehome them until I know for sure they're the cause but deep down I know that they are. It's really hard to take in that in 24 hours they'll pretty much be gone forever. My biggest concern is that Chloe will be able to readjust to a new home. She's 8 years old and I've had her for 4. She's very sensitive and was a plucker when I get her and still is but is much better, close to fully feathered right now. I'm sure that will change.

So sorry to hear that, it's very upsetting news.

I am keeping my birds. With steroids, an air purifier, vacuum with a HEPA Filter, good cleaning regime and wearing a mask when I can.

I am coping.

:)
