My hubby says he sees my future and instead of being the old cat lady, I'll be the old bird lady!

Me too, I'll post a crazy bird picture that's me in 30-40 years, I will have a carriage and many birds when I move to Florida!

Never heard that one before...

Nope! Not me...

LOLOL...I'm glad I've found my flock!! Crazy bird people unite!!!!!

Does your baby come with any kind of health guarantee? Did you have to fill out paperwork or such when you paid for him?

Once you know he's coming home, I'd schedule an appointment with an Avian vet ASAP and have him checked out thoroughly. IF the vet finds anything, I'd hold the store responsible.

Yes, after a baby has been fed, the crop does appear to be quite large, however, at this age the crop should never be so full that it appears to be bulging the way you describe.

Hi JerseyWendy,
Yes, I have 7 days to take him to a vet and then if anything is wrong, I can get store credit or another bird. Quite frankly, I would not get another bird from that store...ever. I guess I could buy bird toys, pellets, perches, and play stands till I exhausted a $1k store credit. UGH. I don't want to return the bird, but if the vet bills are extensive, I think the pet store should be liable for it, seeing as it occurred during their "care".
Yes, the crop was full and wide, like I said, like a bodybuilder with a big chest. I am going to try to visit him again tonight, or tomorrow morning, and if it is still that large, I will demand a vet visit for him.

I would immediately suspect crop infection.

I'm attaching a picture of him...he was like this for 4 hours. I know because I checked on him twice that day. Now, he still looked kinda like that the following morning. I have no idea if the crop ever completely emptied. Like I said, they claimed to have just fed him, but did his crop completely empty? I would hope so!

Are you saying the crop didn't change (in size) for 4 hours? :11: And the next morning it was still that large, but the store claimed they had just fed him again?

A healthy crop WILL get visibly smaller in a 4-hour time period. And yes, looking at the photo, it's quite large.

I won't mince words. It's that large because it's probably full of puss... and that it has progressed to this point without anyone at the pet store even considering getting vet intervention...

Well, don't get me started on what I think! I've been known to rant!

If you're filling the crop, and the bird is still losing weight, then there's a problem, and you need to find out what it is...

If the crop is becoming progressively, abnormally distended...

Okay... I'm ranting! I'll shut up now.

I'd like to slap someone though. I'd feel better.

I'll go home and hug a greenwing instead.

There was minimal change, a smidge smaller, but still looking very "bloated", I guess would be the word for it. I saw him again this morning and it was the same as last night. Though they said he was just fed, so, that's all I know.

He was losing weight this weekend; the full crop began yesterday.

I try to stay out of things like this. I'm not a vet, and I'm not qualified to make these calls... but I would strongly suspect something was up, especially if his droppings or crop smelled funny...

Now I really will go home and hug a greenwing.

OK, if he's still the same, I will demand a vet check from them.

When you visit with your precious baby get your nose as close as you feel comfortable to his beak. A sour crop has a distinct (pus, sour, yucky) smell - preferably without getting your sniffer nipped.

No worries, my sniffer is safe. He's not a nipper, beaks a little, but is gentle (for now). I will definitely take a whiff. I hope it's nothing bad...I mean the whole reason I didn't take him home is because I thought I might mess things up. Now if they did it, I'll be REALLY upset.

He's eating seeds right? Kinda obvious with the millets on the bottom. During weaning time they will gorge themselves with full of seeds constantly within their crop sac. A experienced breeder with in person observation will confirm that. Like I was saying, if you don't have the experience in weaning you wouldn't understand. But he needs to be seen by someone who knows what it is regardless.
