Cockatiel doesn't trust me

I got a Cockatiel (Tweety) about 3 months ago. I know he doesn't trust me but I do not blame him for this because before I got him; he was living in a basement with no light or humans around him. So I know why he doesn't trust me but I wanted to know is there anything extra I should do with him?

I already whistle back at him, talk, and just sit by him.:54:

It always astonishes me how people treat animals, thank goodness you found him, and got him out of that miserable situation.
don't give up on him, your doing the right thing.
patience is the key.
Have you tried seeing if he'll take millet from your hand, or a treat from your fingers?
If he's completely afraid of you, then don't push it.
He's adjusting to a lot and I'm sure he's just waiting to show you how much he loves you for saving him!....but only when he's ready.

Crimson is right. Just have patience. Birds take a long time to adjust to new things & people. I have 2 budgies, I rescued 2 years ago, that are just getting to trust me now. I've tried everthing with them. Birds have to go at their own pace. And thanks for saving him from that horror! When he realizes what you have done, he'll thank you himself, by loving you all the more!

Totally agree with Crimson and BillsBirds. It takes a special person to take on animal that has been neglected. I congratulate you for making the decision to be Tweety's caregiver. Just continue to speak softly, perhaps read a book out loud to Tweety and be patient. Millet is a great tool to work with.

Thanks everyone. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything extra i need to do. Tweety is doing better. He doesn't go nuts when I change is cage, food, or water now and I have gotten to sing songs.
