Charlie, my Peach Front conure, has learned to pull down perches I sometimes store on top of his cage and unscrew the wingnuts/disks on them. Little brat. I've started tightening the wingnuts more than I usually do. So far, he's not done it again, but he's a stubborn little snot, LOL! He's done it twice to me this week!

Charlie cranky as ever_Jan 2025.webp

Feel lucky you don't have a blue throat macaw, who often totally disassemble whole cages! I know of one where the owner had to WELD the cage together because the bird kept taking it apart!

It is so dependent on the individual bird. My B&G has zero interest in biting the bars of his SS cages or trying to dismantle stuff. I had no idea that double welding was even a thing until I started reading about it a number of years ago. I have the mellow version of the macaw. 😜

I had to duct tape the legs of my cockatoos cage together because she would unscrew all the hex nuts, disassembling it. I continued to let her play with all the nuts and bolts (I'd screw them back together) as she enjoyed it and the cage would no longer be at risk of collapsing.

Be happy your friend let you have time before discovering the disassembly gene!!! I think that's at once enjoyable and owner teeth gnashing, snarling effects parrots have on us. My CAG has been a disassembly expert since 4 mo old. That was around 20 yrs ago!

Piccolo loves to hang on the outside of his cage to inspect the door lock. He will do it for up to a half an hour at a time trying to figure it out. Poor little guy doesn't realize the top has one of the circle sliders that is actually what we use. I guess it is just out of his field of vision. But it is super amusing to watch him try to solve the mystery.

That look on Charlie's face says it all! haha

I'm so glad that I only have 2 disassemblers, and that neither take their cages apart. Merlin (our grey) and Charley (our cockatoo) remove every toy we put in the cage, throw it to the bottom and then chew them up down there. We tried using bird skewers and they take off the bolt at the bottom and let everything fall.
