Pepsi and sprite, both are American male budgies
This is mainly for the smaller bird owners . With my two budgies I have always bought cuttlebones and supplements. . They say its mainly for all the calcium they can't get in the wild , but these are seed only owners. Since I feed my two budgies pellets and a assortment of fruits and vegetables do I still have to feed supplements ?

Hi BirdLover,

If your budgies are already on a pellet diet, I don't think extra calcium supplements in the form of powder or liquid is necessary. I would still leave a cuttlebone and/or mineral block in their cage for enrichment activity though, not to mention beak grooming.

I read somewhere that parakeets do best in a seed diet with vitamin supplementation and fresh produce, but I could be wrong.

I offer my smaller birds everything, pellets, vitamin enriched seeds, fruits, veggies, mineral block, cuttle bone, treats of all kinds, etc etc.... :D

Any time hens are in nesting mode, they should have the option/access to mineral blocks and/or calcium blocks/cuttle bones.....their bodies will tell them if they need the added supplementation or not.....

Had a cuttlebone in Rio's cage for the first month. She ignored it. NOW, she is really enjoying her cuttlebone. Wonder what changed?

It was new to her until she figured out what it was for. :)
