Cage size and Diet?

My Alex, Vino has a quite large cage (there are pics of it on my profile). They need to have a fairly tall one because of their long tail feathers and where cages are concerned - bigger is always better! I am saving for an even larger one than she has now.

As for diet - Vino gets zupreem fruit blend pellets, a bean mixture, some brown rice and a corn and peas mixture in her bowl daily as well as lots of fresh fruits and vegetables (blueberries, apples and banana are some of her favourites) and she gets almonds and sunflower seeds as treats... I'm happy to send you my recipe for the bean mixture if you like :)

Hope that helps! good luck with your baby!!!!

Hey Devann :)

Just wondering if you can tell me what bar-spacing you have for your alexandrine's cage, if you don't mind? (I'm looking at BIG cages for my alex when I get him, but am not sure if the one inch bar spacing is too much.)

Charlie is a good name. Our alex is called Monty.

Some other cool names are Sammy, buddy, Max, casper, Basil.
Or you can start a new forum post on pet names and youll get some good ideas.
Heres a link too:
BIRD NAMES - Parrot Birds, new parrot, baby parrot names and pet store supplies

And about bringing your bird home, basically dont crowd him or make sudden or loud noises or movements.
Basically just read his body language, if he gets scared or bitey just back away and give him a few minutes.

Usually getting a bird straight from the hand rearer, they turn out really tame and well tempered.

Hope all goes well, youll have many great years ahead.

Oh and be prepared for noise... lots of noise... every time you leave their site to watch tv or on the phone theyll chirp n screetch n mumble

Thanks 4 the info.
There are so many names on that website

Haha yea , I think we got our name from there, we just short listed the ones that we liked.

And waiting for your bird while he's being weaned seems like it takes foreeeverrr

bummer you dont live in QLD NSW or VIC! i just got a huge cage that i put together for $270 from indepet. good luck with all your choices and bird hunting :)

the only thing i can help you with is be ready for loads of cuddles and snuggles! i have read that they are affectionate birds, and mine def is. he would rather cuddle me than try to learn to fly. they are supposed to be big chewers to edible wood/toys is recommended to keep them active. a tall big cage to allow for their long tails and to be able to move around easily. thats why i bought the bigger cage today and keeping the smaller one for him to sleep in at night in the spare room. other than that - enjoy your new baby boy when you get him. cant wait to see pics :) they grow up soooo quickly!

I'm really looking forward 2 getting him:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
I'll post pics when I get him.

Forgot 2 tell you guys... we actually didn't end up putting a deposit on that guy because we found a breeder that is 5-10 min away from us:)

With the new breeder I found, he/she has babies that should be weaned in 2-3 weeks, and the other breeder has older birds (2-5 months). Which should I get, because Ive read about "bluffing" and not sure what 2 choose?
Advice would be greatly appreciated.
Mike.

???
Sorry 4 being impatient:p

Alex's don't really seem to go thru the bluffing stage. I read about that as well and was worried, but they are pretty much just as tame all the way along.

And just remember when you're looking after him, if he does things that are bad or annoying, they won't understand "no", it's all just attention for them. The way to train them to not do something is if they bite or something, just turn around and not say anything and ignore them for a min. And praise good behaviour.

Okay, thanks:D

Plans have changed. Getting a young Galah next Saturday. Cage and all. We are getting him from a place called: Emblem Aviaries (there are currently 4000 birds in stock!, not all Galahs of course). The owner of the company has a mate that hand rears 150 Galahs a year!!! Excited:D
