Bumble-ing Along

GUYS. Bumble has started "laughing." It's SO FREAKING CUTE I cannot stand it. It's a scratchy little huh-huh-huh and I haven't really been able to capture it on video, but I am trying. She waited until about 2 milliseconds after I pressed STOP to do it. THREE TIMES.

She is so cute, smart and has excellent timing, which is just so important in precise moments of Humor. Laughing after you hit Stop Button is a perfect example!

Yeah she knows exactly what she was doing. And I think she’s glad I finally figured it out, because then she sat on my shoulder and had a good long laugh. Which of course led me to have a good long laugh.

Annual exam test results are back. All is well except calcium is a bit low. Vet said not enough to warrant a supplement-just increase calcium rich foods. Perfect timing, since it’s time to make a new batch of chop!

I told her about the evening long reaction to the sedative. She said she had already made a note to change the protocol next year, and told me about several options. I asked if the blood tests were really necessary, and she said that’s how we know about the low calcium. Nothing is ever easy.

Glad to hear Bumble is doing well. I accidentally clicked on her very first page navigating to here, and saw her photo where she’s sitting in her seed dish, she is every bit as cute now as then!

I realized later that maybe I shouldn’t have put her in that giant cage straight off, but she seems to be none the worse for it now!

Today we’re doing some remedial training. I have a fairly new piercing in my right ear, and Bumble thinks it’s radioactive. She tries to pull it out constantly, and it’s incredibly painful.

Consequently, she’s lost shoulder privileges. Unfortunately, I’ve been lax with enforcing step up, so she refuses and bites the heck out of me instead. Always the fault of the human. I also realized that I have become very hesitant when I put my hand up because I know the bite is coming, which of course feeds her bad behavior as well.

So today I pulled out some flax seeds (bonus, high in calcium!) and set out to retrain her. Every time she steps up nicely, she gets a YES! (My “clicker”) and a seed. When she doesn’t, she gets scooped off my shoulder and deposited on the couch.

Guess how long this retraining took? Not long! Now she thinks it’s great fun to walk/fly to my shoulder and await her treat. I’ll take it.

Next up: get her to stop preening my fingers/fingernails. She starts so gently...but she eventually tears off skin and ouch. Also my fingers look awful and it’s embarrassing. I haven’t quite figured out the training tactics for this one other than setting her down every time. I also try to hold something fun to chew in my hand, which sometimes helps and sometimes doesn’t.

I still love her more than possible, but it’s really time to get some nicer behavior going!

Sounds like you are moving in the right direction. The littlest burbs can be complicated! Love them so!!

Parrots! Always pushing boundaries to see what they can get away with. Must be hard to get annoyed with such a cute little one though, I'd be like "Aww shes cutting my ear lobe in half - isn't that cute?".

Nope, not so much! Haha! It hurts like a mother-bleeper! But yes, she has pushed and been cute and I’ve let her get away with too much so poor Bumble is going to have to start minding her manners.

She continued to rush to my shoulder to collect her treats all day, and also flew around like a crazy-bird playing and being silly, and by bedtime she was worn out and snoozing on my finger. That’s when she gets too cute to manage!

Update. Man that bird is smart. After being really focused on stepping up from my shoulder for that one day (and really let’s be honest-like 3 times LOL), she continues to step up beautifully. My ear is healing, my fingers are happy, I’m not cringing every time I reach up for her. She’s now only allowed on my left shoulder, since she doesn’t take exception to any of those piercings.

Can’t believe I didn’t spend the few minutes to resolve this problem AGES ago.

It is never the fault of the Parrot!
It is always the fault of the Human!
:D

Every time, I have a raging Amazon in my face, I tend to remember those words.

Oh I know it was 100% my fault. I’m just lucky that she’s such a smart little love and decided treats were better than bites so quickly. Of course now she continually heads for my right shoulder, knowing that a nice step up off of it will get her a seed. [emoji23]

Strawberry is correct! She ate (and flung) the outside part with the seeds and then ignored the rest. She sure had fun, and I’ll be cleaning up the mess for a week!

You’re right! Haha! But Bummy prefers to bathe under the tap with the assistance of a mister bottle. I’ve only seen her bathe in a dish/bowl once-when we were in Virginia and she spent a couple of weeks in a cage too small for ANY bird (we had to make do). The dishes that came with it were about 1” square and much too small for her to fit into, so that was obviously the perfect time to bathe in the drinking water. So silly!
