Took Bumble in for her well-baby check on Saturday. Dr. McLaughlin says she looks great, weight is perfect, feathers are good, heart/lungs sound good, and she’s super cute. Bumble also showed off some of her tricks. Blood test came back all normal. Bumble refused to poop so we’ll do those tests later.
Dr. M is not only a CAV, she also is certified in Fear Free Veterinary Medicine and is spearheading the development of a specific avian fear free program. I could see it in little things like Dr. M playing a little game lightly booping Bumble on the back with her finger before she used the stethoscope and giving her lots of treats during the visit. They also give a mild sedative before bloodwork etc. to keep the bird from experiencing any stress and also to keep them from remembering it so they don’t associate the office with VERY BAD THINGS. They offer a maintenance plan that includes 4 office visits a year, once a year “usual” tests, and then a discount off other services. They encourage you to use a couple of those visits to just come in and let the vet play with your bird and give it treats to create positive associations. I didn’t do that last year, and I only used 3 of my visits, so I’ll probably do it this year.
They also called me on Sunday to check and see how she was doing and to see if I had any questions. I missed the call, and when Dr. M called with blood test results, she asked again.
I’m really impressed with this place.
OH! And today I put Bumble’s harness on her! It’s not a perfect fit so the person who makes them is sending a new one, but since it was on I took her on a quick walk around my apartment complex and we sat in the sun for just a few minutes. This picture was the 5 seconds that she wasn’t chewing the harness!
