I had a question about bird harnesses. When I get back from Afghanistan, I am wanting to take my parrot outside the house more often. I have not seen him fly at all since I have had him, but I also do not want to take any chances to find out he can fly when I have him outside. Has anyone here gotten their bird to use a harness and if so, how long did it take for them to get used to it and for you to get it on them with little difficulty?

My galah wears a aviator harness(safest brand, birds can strangle themselves with a feather tether) that comes with a DVD that tells you how to teach your bird to wear it. As long as your bird trust you touching them under the wings it will be fairly easy to used to it.

Before you even start trying to get your bird to wear it you let them get used to the harness as a object by placing it on their cage or near it.

Make sure your bird is comfortable with you touching their wings , placing your hand over their eyes for a second or two , just excepting your hands moving their wings , opening ther wings and holding for a couple of seconds too .
All this will make putting the harness on much, much easier. If this is not possible ,work on it until it is. This could take months ,weeks , days all depends on the bird and how much they allow you to manipulate them.

The Aviator Haress comes with a DVD explaining it step by step , I found it helpful.
Definatley check out the Aviator , IMO , it's the easiest and most explanatory one out there.

Oh , Baby has let me put the harness on him once he got used to seeing it and playing with it , in about a week or less.
Now Stella , I have a problem with, lololol. She LOVES to play with it so much that I have to stuff walnuts or other things in her beak then try to play beat the clock to get it on her,
She couldn't are less what I'm doing to her ,its just she likes to help , lololol.

I used the Aviator and Erin was fine with me putting it on, but she'd just try to eat it off once it was on. Weird. She was okay with me putting it on her but she didn't really want it on...

Good to know, thanks everyone! I was going back and forth between a flight suit and aviator harness, but the AH sounds safer. Now, how do I pick a color? :D The grey or red would coordinate with her feathers best, but I admit to loving the purple. :)

Can we put this thread in a sticky...I think many parrot owners would like this info, not just "Grey" people.

Just remember, you cannot leave a leash on the bird all the time. At least twice a month I get parrot alerts about escaped birds within 30 miles of here. Most common escapees appear to be cockatiels and Greys.

We keep the flight feathers trimmed on our two, so they have the freedom in our house with no screens, and when out and about. Yes, it's a trade-off.

Thanks for the information guys. I am going to check out the AH and see how it looks. As far as Picasso letting me touch him, before I deployed I could inspect under his wings. I would always look to see if his feathers were growing back. So as long as he doesn't hate me for too long for leaving him for a while I should be good.

I too have the aviator. It actually only took me two days to get him into it. He doesn't much like having his wings handled but we manage with the minimum of touching. He does like to "help" pull on the leash to get it loose. Outside though he's pretty calm with it. Now and then he'll pick around at it like maybe a feather is out of place under it or something. I ordered my from My Safe Bird Store and at the time if there was a place to choose colour I didn't see it. The one I got was purple so I was just relieved it wasn't pink or something. :D

I need to put up a picture of my Baby sporting his AH :)
We liked to green color, it's likes olive green which is soooo pretty.
I can understand not wanting the pink one for Jasper ,lolol.
The purple looks really nice on him :).
Stella would love the pink one though :). Although I have the blue one for her which you can't even see next to her color , lolol. I would prefer the pink :). I think she would look adorable , lolol.
The pink color on a female grey would look sooooo cute ,IMO :)
I have tried to get the flightsuit on Baby , but i just don't understand how tight they should fit....the one I ended up getting and trying on him, seemed way too tight and I ended up
cutting it off him . I do have different sizes ,so I need to look into the next size up and try that on him. He did get a little annoyed with the last one , because it was so tight , so I will have to wait a while trying another one on.
Anybody have any thoughts of the FlightSuit , the one that supposed to catch their poop ?
Maybe I have the wrong name....

only pic I have of ReaRea in hers

They make them big enough for Stella?? I didn't realize they went up that big.

And I think it is the flightsuit that has the diapers? Need one of those for Tico, he got me this morning. Luckily I hadn't showered and put on clean clothes yet. Little stinker.

I have an Aviator harness 4 Seaweed.Dont know if hes too fond of having it on at first but he sure does love going outside.Im tring my best to associate the harness with going outside. He sees the harness & makes a bee line 4 it lol.Im very persistant & I think he sees that.Being that he does submit to me putting it on him makes him a good sport.Im hoping that this will change the more often I use it.Im thankful that we have deeply bonded b4 I brought the harness in the picture lol.I think that alone has made all the difference in the world! Has anybodies bird dislike the harness at first but got used to it as time passes?

Any1 have any idea how to download pic on here.Im tring & I cant :( its asking me for http address & the pics I have saved on my desktop doesnt show the http address.Anybody can please help me with this.I wanna share pics of my feathered baby too :) Thank u all 4 ur help :)
