Big problems with little Kumar :(

BTW....we are in Tecumseh....we haven't been/needed the A-vet yet....but where we plan to go when needed.....

I'd be the same way Chris, you bet I would be.

it doesn't matter about his 'techies', they are suppose to be trained and qualified to handle any type of bird. sure accidents happen, and I am sorry you went thru this.
please take pictures!....you never know if in the future you may need them.
his injuries may resurface at a later date, or may be caused from what has happened.

Im floored reading this [Im so sorry]. It might take awhile for him to be his old self. I know how my birds act if we pinch a toe [and its only a toe]. Im glad you called them out on it [its not ok ] . I would have to talk to the girls personally [ to be able to put it behind me ].

May I ask why they felt inclined to give him an xray for a giardia test?

Ok, here's the deal. His initial exam had those tests included, but we didn't do them then (November) because it would have been too much on him. As you know he had problems with plucking, which is turning out to be seasonal/hormonal. But to determine that illness and blockage has to be ruled out. His hormones are in full swing, the air is drier, and he plucked a heart-shaped spot on his chest. He was itchy, and in cases like that Giardia has to be ruled out. I've had him 10 months now and am seeing patterns with seasons and hormones. The patch is already growing in, but he's still itchy. I've started with colloidal oatmeal baths which helps alot as colloidal oatmeal is very moisturing while leaving little residue and non-toxic. 2moro I'm collecting the last morning fecal sample then bringing the samples in. Don't worry I'm not going to cause a scene (I've already done that). I want the results and then I'm done with them. I gave then an appropriate review, and it's a stain on their online bio that will never wash off.

I'm glad you did an online review. It will help future patients and if they are smart, it will prompt them to improve their services. I'm glad to hear the X-ray didn't show anything serious. Kumar will heal up and forget about all this in no time.

Thank you :) oh believe me, it's all documented and filed. My partner has everything handled in that dept. I'm dropping off his stuff tomorrow and not even looking at those people, I want the results and the meds. I have a terrible temper, but I am able to control it thank goodness. I'm not in my twenties anymore :) and do know cool heads prevail. And with my birds I have to keep a cool head because they depend on me.

Thanks Boom. I know in time this will pass, and he'll recover from it much more quickly than I ever will :) thanks for the words of encouragement.

Holy cow, what a horrible experience!! :( :( I'm so sorry this happened to Kumar!! I would gave gone ballistic on them, that's for damn sure!!

Don't blame yourself, you did what you thought was the right thing. I hope he recovers soon.

how is Kumar today Chris?....any improvement??

Actually not much :( he still can't fly. He tried to follow me when I set him down for a sec and fell trying to fly to me. I didn't see any improvement in that dept. he's still very sore and seeking heat. He's currently on the dryer (which is running for him) with his toys and a sweet pepper. His appetite is still decreased, but he did eat some pellets, a few pine nuts, and some pepper. I juiced a bunch of carrots, a beet, and apple so he has juicy pulp to eat all day. I'm going in to the vets about 7pm after I put him to bed.

Hi, Kalidasa. I'm horrified at the treatment poor Kumar received. But if he hasn't flown since Friday, maybe you should have him checked out at another vet? I've never had to deal with a physical injury to either of my birds, (thank God) so I don't have any experience with how long it takes for them to heal, but at this point I'd have to wonder if there isn't some form of tendon, ligament, or muscle damage that might not show up on a traditional X-ray. Something that could cause additional issues if not addressed promptly, you know? Maybe I'm just overreacting, but I thought I'd throw that out there and see what you think.

Hope Kumar feels better soon, Kalidasa.

Holy smokes, Chris, reading what Kumar (and you) went through has my blood boiling. That is absolutely NOT normal! The poor fellow must be quite bruised and sore if he still can't fly. :( What on earth did they do to him? I can't even imagine!

Hugs to both of you!

Thank you. At this point he's not going anywhere. I'm going to see if I can get a housecall from an a-vet near my job, but it's unlikely. I think the jist of it is he's very bruised and stiff. He's beat up pretty badly and I don't want to make matters worse by packing him up and taking him anywhere. His appetite is up a bit, but overall he's in bad shape. To do a test to see tissue damage they'd have to do an MRI. An MRI takes a long time and is 100 times more stressful than an x-ray....and anyone who's had one know what I'm talking about. Or a CT scan, those are bad too. More strapping to a table? No fricking way. I'm just going to baby him back to health. He needs rest and time to heal.

I know, this is a disgrace! We were just talking about it the day before, I had no idea this would be the outcome. :(

Chris, I am so sorry that Kumar is still feeling so bad..Everytime I think about what they did to him I get mad all over again. I am so glad you left an online review - they need to do an internal review of their procedures so this never happens again.
I am praying he feels better soon:(

Sorry to hear of your A-vet problems....Where in Michigan are you located? Since I'm in Michigan also......The rescue that BruceV got Simba from recommended the A-vet in Toledo. Supposed to be first exit off 23. (exit 1) There's an avian enthusiast that shows birds (has the too that took nationals) from Eaton Rapids and she takes her birds there also....

Am I allowed to give another 'thumbs up' for "Dr O"???? I've never seen her myself, but one of my birds has, before I adopted her. I don't know how far away you are from Toledo, OH, but I know that "Dr O" does come highly recommended!

So sorry to hear about Kumar's bad experience at the vets office! :( I'm eagerly waiting for my a-vet to reopen her practice because I don't like anyone else in the area! (My a-vet left the first practice where I found her at and moved somewhere else which was only temporary, then had plans to open up a new one this January... then it was February... now the planned date is mid March!) So I can kind of understand wanting to leave one vet hospital for another.

I checked out your other thread on Kumar. I really hope he's feeling a little better now! Poor guy! I would have probably lost it or walk out quietly and fume about it!

Yup I've been researching dr. "o" , it's far, but do-able. It's been 16 days now and he still can't fly. He's normal in all other ways however. His right wing is still sore when he tries, so he generally doesn't try right now, which is the best thing because he needs to heal.

I hope poor Kumar feels much better soon. I'm sorry about that awful experience for both of you. I was horrified when I read about Boomer's tail and then Kumar. Years ago I worked for a vet who treated birds. I was his assistant and never saw anything like that happen. I tend to agree that it was probably the young girl's lack of experience but still no excuse.

Chris, I'm sorry to hear that Kumar is still not feeling 100%, but glad to know he's doing better and healing. :) I'm still shocked that this happened, let alone bad enough to be lasting like this! Hang in there.
