I am looking to buy a full spectrum light and found the Avian Sun lamp but can't find the bulbs anywhere for sale. I don't want to buy the lamp if I can't get the bulbs...any idea where to buy them? Does anyone know if they going out of business? I tried Amazon, Chewy, Petco etc. This is the one I am referring to: https://zoomed.com/avian-sun-5-0-uvb-compact-fluorescent/

Petco has them. Be careful with those. You could end up blinding your bird if used incorrectly.

Hmmm… I bought mine on Chewy but that was over a year ago. To the above post about these lights potentially being hard on a bird’s eyes: just make sure that the lamp is shining down from the top and not from the side and that your bird can move away from it at will, and don’t leave it on for more than six hours at a time. I’ve used one of these for my Quaker during the winter months and keep it on one side of his large flight cage. Sometimes he would sit right under it, sometimes he would stay on the opposite side of the cage. Hope you can find what you’re looking for!

Waveform lighting has a variety of lights and compleat lamps. Prices are very reasonable especially for multipacks. Delivery is fast too. Got my pack in about 10 days. They specifically advertised their lamps as having no toxic materials. So their safer if broken. https://www.waveformlighting.com/

Doesn't it seen too risky to use lamps that could potentially ruin a bird's eyes? The birds will be fine or close to fine without direct sunlight. I'd never forgive myself if it harmed my bird's eyes!

Unfortunately I don't have safe regular access to open windows. There is a cat who prowls the roof looking for snacks. I don't have normal windows with screens. Also there are problems with people running vehicles or smoking right outside the windows. I do all I can to maintain a non toxic environment but I can't keep others from toxic behavior.

In the same vein, does anyone have any suggestions for how to keep cigar smoke out? It comes through the floor and the birdie and I both have no choice but to breath it.

Too bad you and your bird can't move. Between no fresh air and sunshine, feline predators, vehicles right outside and cigar smoking neighbors I'd be looking for a healthier environment for me and my birds! But I get it if you can't.

There are lights and lights. Some are definitely hazardous to humans, pets and birds. In past (and now) some individuals are using true sun lamps. These were recommended for reptiles, fish, birds and people in the past. I began looking after reading about possible migraine triggers. The 'new' LED type lights have a flicker effect that people can sense but not see. Hence migraine headaches, mood swings, potential seizure activity etc. Birds can see these invisible flickers and have a birdie equivalent of mood swings, irritability to name a few things. These lights and similar brands are currently among the best. I balk at being dependent upon them 100%. The research is changing yearly. Who knows next year studies will come up w something new and 'up to date for pets'! I use the light more indirectly and for a few hours primarily in winter. The window light becomes increasingly indirect as winter progresses. That's for birdie. Since I've used this type for routine lighting, my spontaneous migraine have decreased dramatically. I especially like that while a glass hazard it won't be a chemical hazard if it breaks.

I am home with him pretty much 24/7 so hope to set up a play area with light that he is free to visit. Maybe also add some non toxic plants and one of those budgie waterfall baths? His cage is pretty small but almost always open. I probably wouldn't use the light directly on his cage as there isn't really a dark corner to hide...

That's just the tip of the iceberg.

This is very interesting and I would like to learn more. The lighting in my apartment is primarily the long industrial bright white bulbs- can't think of the name off hand but long tubes in panels...I often get headaches and Ollie is quite aggressive and wasn't before living here. Maybe the lights are to blame...

Well it won't hurt to look. Go to site posted. They have articles and videos. Then do an information search. I was surprised to find out about the flicker effects.
