Parrots
Hahn's macaw, RIP George, Jenday Conure
As Hahnzel approaches his 3rd birthday I've decided it's time to find out if he's a she or vice-versa. Had the sexing done Thursday last and doc said it will take 10 days.
For simplicity sake I hope he's a boy...but it doesn't matter in the long run.

I don't know HOW you and your family were able to go 3 years without knowing! I know many people do... I'm one of those people who just NEED to know lol.

Can't wait to hear what Hahnzel is.... That's such a cute name btw.

Well, I think Hahnzel will work for a boy or a girl bird:) How exciting to finally find out though!

I think when the vet calls, you should get one of those 'pink or blue' inside cakes for the 'big announcement' with your family. Perhaps even Hanhzel could have a tiny bite. This could be a real fun event! Can't wait until you find out.

Okay...it's...a...GIRL!

So of course my next question is, when should she have her own phone? ;)

No, actually it's about eggs. How can I avoid egg laying behavior?

Congrats! Even though you were hoping for a boy just to keep things simple, it's nice knowing, yeah?
The best way to avoid egg laying problems that I know of would be to avoid doing anything/giving her anything that makes her broody during mating season. Not sure when that is for a Hahn's. (Touching wings/back, happy huts, nesting places, etc)

And if push comes to shove and she starts laying, then just make sure she gets plenty of calcium in her diet to minimize complications. Might be best to have a few fake eggs on hand for "just in case" :)

Wow!! isn't it weird when you've known Hahnzel as a boy for years?! Does it seem like he underwent a sex change? Lol... Stop you're from saying "he".

I've never had a mature bird who wasn't male. I usually get males just for the reason that I don't want to have to deal with egg nightmares.. BUT, it does seem like most medium and larger parrots on a decent diet don't commonly have complications to worry about anyway. Good luck with your girl! :)
