How do I hand tame my conure? I have a 14 month old green cheek and he is driving me insane! He is a lovely companion but all I would really like is some advice on getting him to step up. He is a biter, and oh it hurts :p but he looooves treats! Advice will be appreciated, thanks x

How long have you had this bird? Has he been DNA'd...how do you know it is a he?

You're learning already, he's already got you to bring him treats, but rather than him teaching you, here's a video on step up training: Train Your Parrot to Step Up [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uiP0fJk3yM"]How to Train Your Parrot to Step Up | Parrot Training - YouTube[/ame]

Good luck.....

The Video is average while they teaching the bird to step up they aren't teaching the bird to step down. The bird is doing it without being told. if you train a bird to step up. Then train it to step down.

Thank you I will give it a go.
I have had the bird about 2 months and no he is not DNA'd it's a guess.

I used a pencil or pen with a treat to teach my gcc to step up at first. He never had a problem stepping down. Now when I just put my finger in front of him he steps up, and when I put him on table or play stand, or cage he steps down. I guess he is not enjoying staying on my finger. Do not ignore the biting! Your bird has to understand that you are very displeased with him hurting you. I used to give my gcc a very dirty look and scolded him for biting, and he stopped very soon.

Sorry my suggested video didn't meet your expectations Delfin, but then, of course you were also free to post a link to something better suited to your more discerning tastes...or...maybe Lucyxo & others would find better resources through this link: Training - Parrot Forum - Parrot Owner's Community

Enjoy.....

This has nothing to do with expectations or discerning tastes. If the bird is going to spend time out of it's cage, Assuming the bird can fly. Then the bird will need to trained a few simple requests or 'commands'. If the bird is wing clipped then it probably will only need to 'step up and step down' training.
The requests or 'commands' are
'step up' Means, Please step up onto my finger / hand. This request is most important and that's why it's first.
'step down' Means, Please step down off my finger / hand onto another perch.
'stay' means, Please Do not come to me.
'come' means, Please come to me.
'Go' Means, Please Fly off me and go to your stand or cage.
'Off there' Means, Please leave this spot and fly to your stand or cage.

Once the bird is trained these requests or 'commands' you will have good control of your bird while out of the cage and will be easier to supervise.

There are many dangers in the home and it only takes a split second for the bird to land somewhere that is unsafe or unsuitable, just approach the bird and say 'Off there'.

Remember to praise the bird for their co-operation.

I do agree that the Parrot forum Link you posted would be a better resource than some poor home made video from YouTube.

I think all of the contributions thus far are potentially helpful to the OP. Walt's (weco's) link provided a visual step by step of what veimar described, while Delfin helped to fill in any gaps the video might not have covered.

That's the beauty of this forum. Less likely to miss something with all of us looking out for one another.

Lucy, you've gotten some great advice. Please let us know how it goes with your green cheek.
