To everyone that helped me yesterday, THANK YOU! I spent all day yesterday handing him treats, and he even got to the point where he would grab them from me thru the cage! He still runs when the door is open, but he no longer panics when I walk in the room ESPECIALLY when I have his bag of treats. I remembered yesterday my father always wore a baseball cap! I thought perhaps my much longer hair could have been a bit alarming to a small bird who was not used to it, so I put on one of my dad's old hats and an old sweatshirt he wore frequently. GUESS WHO STARTED MAKING ALL SORTS OF HAPPY NOISES! He still would not let me near him, but he seemed much more comfortable with me being in the room dressed like this. I was able to contact the person who sold Michael to my dad. He is apparently only a year or two old and he has offered to help me with training if I need. Michael has a vet appointment next week to make sure he is in good health up to date on everything he needs. Wish us luck!

Yep we have some pretty smart cookies that make hugely valuable contributions here on the Forums (myself not included, I’m just here to provide the odd bit of comedy relief!)

I’m sorry for your loss of your dad, that’s a lot to deal with in itself. Your idea of wearing the baseball cap was a stroke of genius! I think you’re on the right track with Michael and that one day it will be like a light bulb goes off in his head and he’ll come around. It may take a while to happen but when it does it will be so rewarding for you.

Best of luck with the vet visit, hopefully Michael will get a clean bill of health!

This is actually a brilliant idea. I recently had an 'issue' with new comforter thats since been resolved.

But just today I got my new smartphone and wanted to take pictures of Skittles with it (big mistake, lol). He was fine with the actual phone, just not fine with it being so close. So, I put a power treat in my hand and put the phone between him and the treat and eventually put one foot on it and then grabbed the treat and now its not a problem.

Im so glad you got help with this. It is an extremely effective way of eliminating fears. If only it worked on my neighbor. lol.

A belated welcome to you and Michael! I just read through this post and your previous posts, thank you for sharing Michael’s story. Deepest condolences for the loss of your father, I’m so sorry for your loss and Michael’s. Sounds like things are progressing well, I think your idea to wear a shirt and cap of your father’s is brilliant, I’m sure Michael appreciated the gesture. It must seem like it’s taking forever for Michael to acclimate to his new environment but believe it or not, he’s making extreme progress considering all he’s going through. I have no doubt the two of you can work everything out and form deep and lasting bonds.

Thank you for the kind words, Sid. You’re right our members are the best of the best. Happy to have you join us. I’m looking forward to watching this story unfold.

Thank you. It always feels so good to be appreciated, and to give, and to receive, with like-minded good folks.
I'm very, very glad you're here. Very.
