I have been trying fruitlessly (no pun intended) to get Skittles interested in fresh foods since I first brought him home two weeks ago. I realize now I was going about it all wrong.
I usually would put half a slice of apple or some rough chopped veggies in his cage. Skittles showed absolutely no interest in any of it.
So today I took half an apple and a single baby carrot. I then took a apple peeler and proceeded to shave both to ribbons. I then sliced, diced, and mashed until the pieces were half the size of a grain of rice.
I then split the mix and put half in Skittles cage and half in Bruno's. Bruno may have touched his mash but it doesent look like it. But a little while ago I watched Skittles climb to the bottom of his cage and investigate his new dish. I did cheat a bit and when I made up his dish I took too little sprigs of millet and lightly dusted the fruit/veggie mix.
IT WORKED!!! At first Skittles was just after the millet but in no time he bobbing his head in and out of his bowl munching on some fresh carrot and apple! I was so proud of him! I wanted to jump up and down and cheer, lol but I figured that would scare him off his bowl.
So YAY at least one of my parrots has tried fresh food and enjoyed it! Hopefully the extra fine dice and tiny bit of millet will always do the trick.
Anyways just had to share that little victory
