Was looking to get some wooden puzzle toys for Perjo, the kind with or without knobs on them that are made for 1-4 year old kids.

Just curious if there is a brand out there most people purchase and use. From the ones I have seen none of them give much info or any at all about what they are made out of.

I see a Melissa and Doug Jumbo Knob Puzzle for shapes that I would like, but cannot get any info on the type of wood or material it's made out of.

Commonly, the more expensive ones are made from maple. As the price point drops, the quicker they become softer woods until you finally arrive at cardboard.

You could always call the company and ask what kind of wood their puzzles are made of

I did buy Plum a childs wooden puzzle from a good quality kiddy store.

The other option is if you know anyone who has any wood working skills and the kit to make something to your spec?

The manufacturer, Melissa and Doug's, said those toys are of course tested to be safe for kids but that's as far as they go, understandable. They make those puzzles/toys out of MDF.

Common sense and my gut says stay away from that for a parrot. But I don't like to assume to much.

MDF:

Good or bad?

MFD = wood fibres and resin. Resin probably not so good for birds

Yes the one I have has a MDF on the bottom and wood on top. This works for me and is used with supervision - as with everything common sense applies. Fortunately Plum gets 'bored of it' very quickly so it is a chuck it rather than chew it.

My girl would make matchsticks out of anything wood in minutes. Glues, resins etc would give me pause. Ideally would be best if you can find these items crafted out of a single piece of hardwood perhaps?

This is what I was interested in for Perjo.

Try it and see - the dangers have been spelt out here so you should be aware.

Positive - it is hand made, and I assume paint OK?

Are you going to do instructional play with Perjo? Let us know how it goes.

Now that I know it is MDF I will not even bother, IMO it is a worthless risk. We all know a parrot will destroy that toy over time anyway and in the end even if she loved it and learned form it, that slight chance of ingesting resin doesn't interest me at all.

I'll look for a plastic version.

I found some Imaginarium wooden kid toys today that would be great, a ring pyramid toy, but unfortunately it's just too big to expect a CAG to be able to pick up the individual wood rings and place them on the pole.

How about a coloured ring and peg set, there has been mention recently on here of a member teaching their bird to put the correct coloured ring on the correct coloured peg.

Is this the type of play time you are trying to achieve? If it is there is loads you can do such as put the ball in the cup and reward.

Yes that kind of what I'm going for. But something I don't have to assist Perjo in handling the toy.

I'm looking at getting the game Perfection for her, one of the original ones from the 80s. Nice and small, plastic, and let her figure out the shapes a few at a time.

Ok, couple of things spring to mind, take care with small plastic parts, if she is unsupervised and gets bored and decides to eat the parts not good.

Part of the fun is them interacting with you and you playing too. You will see that she wants to please and for that to happen you need to be part of it.

Plum has a wooden puzzle like you have previously shown and will only play with me which is fine and intended but his attention span is short. Hope you find something you are happy with. :)
