vincent-b/g macaw archie-alexandrine and coming in june greenwing macaw and millitary macaw this year too fingers crossed
hey guys just wanting know what u all feed ur birds from morning to bed time

My bird eats from his food bin in his cage, which contains seeds, grains, peanuts, and dried red-long chili. We do also feed my Fid the occasional food we are eating, which varies from leafy greens, fruits, grain, cereal.

Bella eats pellets, a treat (usually a healthy mix from the exotic bird store), a fruit (apple, banana, etc...) a pasta mix & I have millet in her cage (1-2 per week). Bella is trying to gain weight so we have "snack" time more often than other birds do! Bella is just so active it is hard to keep her from burning calories!

Poncho has Tropican pellets, Bailey has Zupreem. Plus in the AM they both have a little bit of fruit usually red grapes/apples/bananas. Poncho also loves his cheerio's in the morning Bailey perfers whole wheat toast, at the PM they will get whateve veggies may have been cooked up. As treats we do walnuts shelled/unshelled and popcorn.

Ok you asked for it! I make both an am and pm mash in the food blender using many ingredients. Sweet taters, assortment of grains, brown rice, unhulled sesamae seeds for calcium, both winter and summer squash, (all vegies are cooked - she will eat no raw ones), carrots, sm. portions of spinach, peas, multiple kinds of beans in the mashes. Her fruits are papaya, melons, apples, pomegranate seeds, oranges. I season with herbs that are good for birds like cinnamon, cayene, sometimes ginger root and celery seed. I am getting ready to feed her the pm mash right now. A tsp. of yogurt in the afternoon is also given. Oh and corn bread is always mixed in the pm mash. Recently added 1/4 tsp. red palm oil per day. Yes, this is the daily intake in small portions.

There is an assortment of pre cracked nuts in the cage every day. No peanuts. Nutriberries as a treat but not daily.

great just trying sort out food schedule for vincent keep them comming guys

Charlie gets bird porridge (Beak Appetite) in the morning, pellets (harrison's) during the day, some sort of small bit of fresh veggie clipped in during the day, veggies in the evening (we're working on it - so far he mostly likes peppers but is starting to try some other kinds), and almonds and a very small amount of millet as treats (the millet is a foraging treat for during the day).

is normal porridge ok for ur birs to try? vincent isnt a fan of veggies yet thing is theres alot hes not keen on, but suppose its cause he young still, he loves his grapes banana peppers oranges passion fruit pomergranite, but want get him eatting more veg any ideas?

Tannie Di once posted that human porridge has added iron etc. that can be harmful for our birds because they cant absorb all of it - not the exact words but something like that.;)

for nut it depends on what our work/school scedule is

morning is harrisons pellets she will nibble on these while she waits for her bit of toast (seeded bread, that she loves) some times she won't eat her pellets

then its off to her main cage, where harrisons and lafeberries are on offer and another dish of fresh fruit and veg, she loves pomegranet, and them dawrf beans in the pod, but she is fussy on these, they have to be uber fresh, one squeek and she drops them, apple, orange segment

dinner is her fav meal :) i cook something we can all eat and she gets her share, rice pasta, noodles, meat (only in tit bit portions) while she is in her sleeping travel cage, this is her bedtime routine, she eats dinner with us and then gets taken to the spare bed room for her to sleep.

as for gettin her to try different veg, if she see's us eating it, she'll give it a chew to see if she likes it, she hates carrots, raw, cooked pulped etc brocoli, its so funny offering her brocoli, she wont even open her beak, and just uses her beak to push it back outta her cage :)

at the moment she is stalking my stick insect tank :O there off the menu!! but given half the chance she'd have them

Remember that when you are offering your bird different foods the presentation is very important. Hide in foraging toys, use kabobs or as I do cook it all in to a mash. My bird much prefers cooked vegies. in a mash. Yes, watch the iron content in foods that are already prepared like baby foods because too much iron can lead to fatty liver disease. Don't get me wrong here our birds do need some iron for carrying oxygen in the blood but too much over a period of time is not good. Nutrition is one of my favorite subjects and I have studied it over and over again. It is a changing subject being studied by many experts.

Not too many people mentioned fresh sprouts. I have lots and lots of good seeds to sprout but Rosie keeps on refusing.

thanks guys great info as always

angel adores sweet potatoes, even more than grapes, especially while its still warm. is the veg you give vincent raw, my galah wont eat raw veggies, i have to cook his. i know angel loves warm food so you could try giving vince cooked brussel sprouts and carrots while they're warm or grate carrot and sprinkle over his fruit

Got my curiousty up? When Mondo had the carrot it took 2 days for him to touch it.
We found out from the previous owner all Mondo has had for the past 10 years is, (and I'm only the mesenger) Seed mix from Walmart, peanuts (he loves) and occasionly chicken. So you think that's why it takes so long on changing?
We are going to switch him to Pellets, have been told that Zupreem is good.
Sorry to hijack this thread, keep the ideas comming! I've got soooo much to learn.
Can't amagine trying to do this without this Forumn's help!

hijack away were all bird lovers lol

Most parrots are suspicious of new foods and we, as their guardians. must show them by example that these foods are meant to eat. Now do not go eating pellets or seeds of course.
You need lots of patience to switch a long time seed eater to pellets. Do you have a scale to get wt? For Mondo you may want to try and see if he likes the carrots cooked with some of the seasonings I mentioned. If so I suggest you invest in a food processor if you do not already have one. Tomorrow I am going to cook butternut squash, carrot and then process into a paste. To that I will add all kinds of cooked vegies and sesame seeds, celery seeds, spices, organic quinoa and anything else I think would be good that is in the kitchen. I use a parrot cook book published by Phoenix Landing that is an excellent resource, both for knowledge and ideas. Yes it is expensive but well worth the price.
