What Do I Do?

Monday-a-week ago, having removed that horrible hidey-hut, it became evident my Sunny's cage was just too small. And, having found a perfect, large, multi-level, heavy, cage on casters, I ordered it from Amazon. Delivery via Ground -- it arrived the Very Next Day (Tuesday).

On Weds morning of last week I assembled it carefully (with some timely help from my landlord), placed my happy bird into it, and rolled it into the living room.

I then grabbed all my stuff, including coffee, and began to leave, turning back to respond to my Sunny. The coffee cup went flying toward a surge protector blocked by the new cage, and, still holding my purse & etc, I bent & twised to quickly grab the cup & wipe the mess.

Well some back pain started that afternoon. And I had some plans over the weekend and did not rest, and etc and etc and...
... this afternoon I spoke with two doctors who both insist I require back surgery asap. (I'm not fully onboard with the idea of surgery actually. But they were pretty convincing.) And they further said that if A-B-C happens I am to immediately take myself to a particular ER posthaste. ETC.

I don't have any relatives nearby to call on. My landlord might agree to feed my birds -- but, has a highly irregular, days-away schedule.

I keep running through thoughts of who can take in my Budgies & my Sunny. Or who can come & just feed & water them. It's not a long list. My first choice would be friends with birds who live 2 hours away and that won't work. I can think of a few people whom I can ask to stop in to feed & water them - but, I don't know if they will be actually able to do so.

If you can find someone locally on the forum, it's possible that they could help.

If not, a pet sitting service might be willing (although that sometimes costs more).

worst-case-scenario, you could board your birds with a reputable person. I al always cautious in that department due to disease risk, but you have to do what you have to do.

I would second the idea that maybe someone here could help you. Where do you live?

And I had back surgery last fall for a herniated disk. 100% recommend if that’s your situation. And let me know if you want to chat about it.

I have just taken my birds to stay with some wonderful friends who will love them and take good care of them for me. This is such a relief. I was having terrible thoughts of my poor birdies here alone, or worse.

I am very appreciative of the suggestion that maybe someone here could help. Just the thought helped calm my worries about the birds, a little, so I could start to think thru my panic. Thank you!

Inger thank you so much for your comment. So many times I have only heard bad things. But of course, if it works, you can then go on about your life, right? I hope? I am terrified.

Re: What Do I Do? - Here's what I did.

So it's been another whole week now. Here's my update:

Sunday a week ago (5/5), in the morning my whole church prayed over me. Our pastor anointed me with oil.

That evening at 7pm, the muscle in my leg which had been entirely non-responsive the prior week, returned to life. Also the reflexes in my legs returned.

The next morning, had been scheduled for an appt for the surgeon-specialist to read the mri & determine the specifics of the upcoming disc surgery. I called & rescheduled, to allow the improvement time to take-hold before the long drive to the appt. During the past week, I worked on exercising the muscle, which has been severely weakened by a week of complete non-use.

Friday I went in for the rescheduled appointment. And the same doctor who a week prior had told me I MUST have surgery asap, looked at me and said, "You do NOT need surgery." !!!!

Yay. Yay! I am still obviously quite happy about this.

Sunday, yesterday, I picked up my birds from my friends. Amazing wonderful friends to help me out by taking them in!

The birdies all enjoyed the drive home, but were otherwise a bit subdued.

The budgies quickly returned to almost-normal, after a nap, and were happily chirping away yesterday afternoon. (I say almost-normal, because as of this morning they had Not returned to their recent squabbling; instead sitting close together like they used to do when I first got them.) Their feathers are growing in a bit which is going to leave me in a quandary... maybe worth another thread.

Sunny on the other hand was abnormally silent all day yesterday. Based on her loud yelling the day we left, and silence when we returned, I almost wonder if she wonders if her week away was a response to yelling?

((Then again maybe she was just too busy too yell. Yesterday, you'd've thought my friends had starved her -(no, there's NO CHANCE of that!)- from the way she had her face in her food dishes all afternoon.))

Anyway, she seemed quite happy this morning, if still a bit more quiet than usual. Hopefully she will be fine tomorrow. (Well she can stay quiet if she likes. A quiet Sun Conure -that might be great.)

At this point, I'm gonna say we are all happy together!
