Hi all,

My male eclectus has been home for two weeks now. His weight was 349 grams at the store. Now he is hovering between 325 - 335 daily. He's eating ok. New Daily diet includes fruit n veggie, rice, bean, corn, pea and Volkman eclectus mix and zupreme fruit pellets.
I think he got a little hooked on pellets n Volkman mix while at the store for a few week.
Is it normal for him to loose some weight while adjusting to new home and new diet?
Also, after reading about colored pellets, I m looking for a new non colored pellet to switch from zupreme fruit blend colored ones. Any input?

Thx

if he was on a high seed or pellet diet i wouldn't stress to much, is he wormed??

With any weight loss I would take the bird to the vet just to make sure its nothing serious. As far as pellets go I would recommend Harrisons, they are organic and don't have any artifical coloring at all. Oliver loves them but I try to give him as little as possible because he'll throw his veggies out to get to the pellets.

lol i use harrisons too but nuts the other way round, she throws her pellets out lol

but vet check to be sure, could be something as simple as the 2 scales not being right

Zupreem makes a natural pellet also

Just make sure that the colored fruit pellets are NOT artificially colored. Eclectus should definitely NOT have any artificial colors or flavors. They are known to have some nervous system issues (toe tapping) due to those things. They are more sensitive than other birds (according to the books I have read). They also need more vitamin A than other birds. I recommend (if you haven't already) getting an eclectus book and reading about their dietary needs. Good luck :)

Well I have had our male home for about a month & he was given colored pellets & seeds so that is what he likes & I'm trying to switch him over bit he still prefers this rather than the veggies or fruits. Im having a hard time with fruits. He takes a bite & then throws it to the floor of his cage. Also I try saving the fruits till night when we are home but I get home around 6 & he doesn't eat much after that. Any suggestions would be appreciated

My eclectus also takes a bite and then throws her food. I have noticed that she just eats that way, it doens't mean she doens't like it. She does this with all food! lol She is a very messy eater. To solve this problem, I cut her fruits and veggies into very small pieces. She doens't seem to throw the small pieces. Try this and see if it works.
