I've been following a lady who kept macaws on another forum. She had a 1.5 year old scarlet macaw who was loosing weight. She had to put him down yesterday, her vet thinks it was PDD. This lady followed strict quarantine procedures when getting a new bird, but her newest baby must have come as a carrier from the breeder. I have found this article about the disease Saving parrots from killer disease - Wilmington Pet Health | Examiner.com. This is very scary, I have never heard of anyone who routinely screen for this disease. I spend time @ the pet shops visiting other birds, I always make sure I wash my hands really well b4 handling merlin, but it doesn't look like thats enough to keep it from spreading. I guess I won't be doing that anymore. Has anyone lost a parrot from this? Did it spread to any other birds? I wonder if you lost a bird, would a bird that came later be in danger?
