So we put a deposit down on a Cape Parrot!! Im so excited, we should know DNA this week some time. The baby is expected to wean mid to late April.

So now what? LOL I just gaze longingly at the calander and wish my life away?
:D

I love the Capes :) such cute faces they have, and brilliant colors in person. Are you hoping for a male, or female with an orange cap?

I'd love one too, but I feel maxed out here for the foreseen future! I will say, someday I'll get a Cape too when I feel I can have another bird ;).

Congrats on finding one... those are a bit hard to come by these days.

Mark, they aren't... Raven's breeder specializes in them, Old World has them, African Queen (Jean Pattison), and Omar's has them regularly (seasonally). Those are the reputable or well known few off the top of my head. In the whole US I'm sure there are plenty of breeders nowdays. They are less common, but not rare anymore.

The thing that makes them less popular still I'd imagine is the price. $2000 for a medium sized bird is not something everyone is willing to do. My little Griffin the Ruppell's says "I'm rarer but I wasn't much more expensive than my common relatives" :p. There's that demand/or lack of again as a big factor in setting the price. The Capes are so 'showy looking' for Pois that they would command the high price regardless.

Well at $2,000 a pop, I bet there are going to be a lot of folks breeding them now! WOW!

I've only played with one of these guys. Itty bitty bird (relatively speaking.) Thick large macaw sized beak, and very sweet. It's that beak that stood out to me. It's thick, like a greenwing beak.

Congratulations! I so love Capes, and there are no breeders anywhere around me. Please do share pictures when that sweet baby comes home!

They are a little rare. You don't see them available locally like you do conures and b&gs. There's a handful of cape breeders, but I bet there's hundreds to 1000s of green cheek breeders. Back to supply and demand.

Congrats on your new baby. I love them and their looks and their voices are absolutely precious.

Thank you everyone!!! We are still waiting on DNA to come back, my husband is hoping for a female..Im just thrilled to be getting one! The baby hatched on what would have been my mothers birthday, so its a little more special for us.

This is my dream bird and the price is a bit much, but I figure for a few decades of companionship its really nothing LOL

It will be a couple of months before he/she is home and I will definately be posting pictures!!!:D:)

Yep - watch the calendar. It's what I'm doing and it is nerve wracking but exciting at the same time.

Its awful LOL I always feel like I have so much to do. I cant decide on a cage. I bought and returned 3 cages before I decided I had the right one for my sengal. Im trying to avoid that this time:09:

I hope I don't do that. I know what cage I think I want but I'm not sure of the color. I try to choose the color of the cage that will enhance my bird. That sounds kind of dumb but if the cage comes in different colors why shouldn't you choose the color for the reason you want.

DNA is in and we have a girl!!!! Her name will be Xolani (Zo La Nee)

We are thrilled and now all we can do is continue to wait LOL:):):):)

Congratulations on your girl Xolani! :)

She's the Brown Necked subspecies? Out of the 2 capes we have as pets here, rather than the Gray Headed?

She is the brown necked :) Her parents average around 300 grams, so this is a little "big" bird for us :p:

Xola is home and wow she is a complainer, bossy and wants what she wants no matter how has it LOL
She saw the vet Tuesday and they were impressed with her condition and we are just waiting on a few tests to come back.
This girl is the pickiest eater I have ever seen!! Im sure part of that is simply settling in, she just came home this past Monday (05/02)
Pictures just dont do these birds justice, absolutely gorgeous!!!

Is there an easy way to post pictures LOL

I have noticed this trait with ours too. She was delicate and demure when we first got her, but after a few weeks she has come to be quite comfortable with attempting to assert her will upon the humans ... of course she loses that battle every time to the human who feeds and cares for her (me), but she continues to try! lol
