Vets and blood analysis spacing

Hello everyone, I've got a question for you. My Grey is almost 9 years old and has had blood tests done annually. Nothing has ever come out except for the occasional he needs a bit more sunlight or a bit more protein... Generally speaking he has a good diet (Harrison's, supplemented with vegetables almost daily and fruit every other day) . He's an indoor bird, so he doesn't meet any other parrots or birds. He just lives at home with me and my husband. Anyways, the new vet I saw today recommended that I only get a blood test done once every two to three years if he isn't showing any symptoms or giving me any reason to fear for his health. Then again, I'm afraid he'll hide his symptoms until it's far too late. The doctor said that if he isn't in any high risk situations of catching anything then it's a bit too much for a yearly blood test.

What do you all think? Thank you for your help..

Kind regards,

Kent and Simba, the CAG.

Hi, sounds Ok to me but this might be useful for future reference

How Do You Know If Your Bird is Sick: Signs of Disease and Illness in Pet Birds

You have his diet under control and you can rectify the sunlight problem by a) getting a lamp b) taking him to sit in the garden with you time to time in either a smaller cage or on a harness. The only shame I can see is that he doesnt get any socialisation outside of home.

Relax! :)

Thank you for the links. My bird is peculiar, without a doubt. But don't worry. He socializes. We go outside together on a harness, he often visits my parents at their home as well. I am a teacher, so also frequents my classroom on days that I don't have to be there for too long. Everyone really loves him. He gets nervous when people approach him, but enjoys seeing new people. So that's good!

Regardless, I know a lot about these kinds of symptoms. But my parrot shows some of them, the social ones about being in the cage, and checking his poop is something I do frequently but it really depends on what he eats! If he eats a lot of fruit it's often more liquidy. If he eats only Harrison's, then it's a solid brown green normal. So when he takes a sip of my orange juice it gets a little foamy, but only for the first poop and then goes back to normal. Or it has bubbles... He's a strange one, indeed. But for the past 7 tests he hasn't had anything abnormal and generally very healthy! So I'm glad for that... But since I have a funny little bird that often likes to sit towards the bottom perches of the cage, I get worried. But in the end I think he enjoys being in the lower areas of his gym and cage.... That's why I always insisted on a blood test a year.... Because his normal behavior is something common for sick behavior... [emoji52]

As you seem very on the ball with symptoms and behaviour and speaking from someone who is pretty much the same I feel you would spot something of consequence. Poop watching ha ha, yes lots of us do it!

Now relax! :)
