Hello fellow Bird lovers I am new here and am searching for some help for my cockateil chick.

This chick has an unusual wing on one side. The last section of wing what I would call the secondary flight feathers is twisted around so that the underside of the end of the wing is facing upwards. It doesn't tuck in neatly against the birds side.

I hope you can understand what I'm talking about:rolleyes: This particular chick is a lutino weero which has been rejected by its parents . It is about twelve days old.

I am an experienced breeder and handraiser but have not come across this particular disability before. I am not sure that this bird would be able to fly. Any suggestions on how i can help it?

Thankyou everyone

Hey there, is there any chance you could get a picture for us to see? It's a bit hard to understand /exactly/ what you mean. :)

A picture would be great help. We have a budgie that can't fly, I'm not sure if he was like this since birth or not but I assume so. His wing itself looks fine but you can tell that when he lifts his wings he hold the right one up a little higher and when he tries to fly he just crashes. Other than that, he gets around just fine and seems to be very happy, he's actually our own adult that will play with his toys, and he LOVES his toys :09:. I ended up clipping his wings just to try and teach him that he couldn't fly. He didn't seem to understand that he couldn't and he would jump off of things, try to flap and land on the floor. I was afraid of him hurting himself so I clipped him, he seems to understand a bit better now and doesn't try to fly unless something really scares him so I am letting them grow back out now and his flights are almost all back. He is the best climber I have ever seen because of it. He manages to climb back up to the top of his cage from the floor, using anything he can. I've already been looking for him on the floor, all upset about him possibly hurting himself, then I look up and realize he is already back on top of his cage!

The joint could be dislocated. You can try manipulating the joint yourself. Gently massage the tip between finger & thumb. If you can get it into the right position then tape it with a surgical tape for a week or two.

Why do you think the parents have rejected this baby. That is not the norm really unless the chick can't sit up properly to feed & misses out on feeds, they then become weak & die.

But yes a pic would be good.

It's really my own fault that this chick was rejected and one other with it. I let my birds breed too late in the season and we had a horrible heat wave 40 C and over. And one of my chicks died in the nest. I took the others out during the day and put them back at night as the parents are tame they were ok with this. But after a few days they stopped feeding them. It was just too much interference. But with another 40C day today the only way was for me to take over.

I will take some pictures today. Pedro you might be right the problem seems to be coming from the joint.

I don't think that it will be life threatening, but I would definately reccomend against letting it breed.
