Military Macaw - Trucker - hatched in 99'
So Trucker our military macaw has been with us for a couple months now. He now eats anything we offer him. That includes his chop mix, his Harrison's pellets, and all kinds of other healthy stuff! When wet got him, he stunk of cigarettes, had horrible feather quality, and was on an all seed diet. Now his feathers shine and the cigarette smell is almost completely gone! He's has also become a family bird and enjoys both my husband and I's attention. He does like my husband more, but tolerates me amazingly well. I can give him showers, he steps up almost every time for me, and he lets me give him head scritches. He even got the all clear from the vet! I'm so glad we were able to take him, he has such a better life now. He is only confined to his cage to sleep at night, and he gets attention all the time now. I just wanted to update everyone who commented on the first thread I made about him, and let you all know how great he is doing. He is such a sweet bird! Here's a picture the day after we brought him home. Kind of hard to see but his feathers were all ratty looking.

And here he is in his new cage after breakfast this morning.

Thanks guys we're so lucky that we got to experience this. Seeing him progress like he has is an awesome experience. He really is a magnificent bird, I just don't understand how anyone can neglect these guys like they do.
Here he is enjoying some soak and cook bean mix mixed with golden obles and his chop.

He's beautiful! You and your husnad have big hearts and must be great bird owners to get his trust so fast. Good job! Thanks for giving Trucker a great life!

Hmmm... a three way with a macaw! What exactly are you training this bird to do?! :D

He looks great! And yeah, I know. I have rehabbed a few big macs in my time. They end up locked away and neglected in cages and become unhappy... so they bite the person who did that to them. Then they become afraid to handle them, and it continues that way indefinitely...

That seems to be the pattern with large macaws.

BUT if you work with them, they are the opposite of the "aggressive" reputations. I really do think these are the most toddler like of all the parrot species...

And it's amazing to see an unhappy big mac, turn around, when the playful toddler-bird comes out! And a mush mac on your lap at the end of the day, is the best reward for all that work...

"Birds with baggage! HA!"

He's never been a biter, just got pushed into another room and forgotten about basically. My husbands grandma was afraid of him, but his grandpa can handle him just fine. They are just old folks with health issues and no time for the 5 birds, well 4 now that they have.
