Travelling with GCC by train

I'm travelling home for a few days with my GCC on the train. Just wondering if there are any dangerous fumes on a train I should be wary of? I don't think there are but I wanted to make sure he has a travel cage, food and water and toys as well as a cage that we'll assemble once we arrive up north. Any suggestions or helpful tips would be much appreciated!

Are we talking in the train cabin with you? Or would your GCC be traveling in the cargo area? In the cabin I wouldn't imagine it being an issue, but I have no idea how safe or not any cargo areas might be.

Its been many years since I have traveled by train, but I do not think that much has changed.

As with any public transportation, call in advance to verify any travel requirements. Since 9/11 there have been some changes and restrictions, so you really to check.

In the old days, the cargo car was a center of activity as at every stop, items would be removed and added. Fumes are not a serious problem, but understand that the cargo car is open to the great outdoors at every stop.

As with any travel, time is the biggest factor, that is, the longer the trip the more issues that can arise. Therefore having eyes on and either adding water and food or changing out whatever you use on the bottom of the travel cage can be performed by you during the trip is much preferred. You also get to interact with your Parrot when it is with you.

You will need to check, but it is likely that the boxed cage will have to travel in the cargo car as will anything more than carry-on.

I have nothing to add to this (having never traveled by train) but i wish you a good trip. I am also traveling (leaving Saturday) with my pets from NJ to Florida. Gilbert travels by car frequently but normally within an hour or two of our home. This will be his first all day road trip. I actually plan to spoil him a little in the car (lots more snacks than usual...won't kill him for one day and will make it feel more like a fun adventure to him than a day of thinking 'why the heck am i sitting in this small cage all day?')

If you have easy access from the front seat (Passenger Of Course! ) You can set the travel cage facing forward in the center of the back seat. Use that positions seat belt by running it up to and though the hand and lock back at the seat base.

He is used to riding in the back in just his small carrier, but instead of being in that tiny thing all day, i am putting him in a small cage and going to rig the seat belt to keep the cage stable. The dog crate will be on the back seat next to him!
This will be a memory-making adventure for us all.

FYI: Remember to take a large Bath Towel (color of his choice ) so that you can cover his cage during the early hours and later hours! Some Parrots are set back of the lights during darkness!
