I seen a thread on a backpack type bird carrier and thought how cool! I looked at them and seen that there are a couple different kinds. If I was rich I would get one of each but that's not the case here. So I'm thinking that the backpack type is pretty nice, I also see the clear plastic ones too. Having a 360 degree view would be great in the clear box type one for my feathered friend. Living in Pa its starting to cool off now that its fall. I think the backpack would be a little bit warmer in the winter. I also think the clear one would be nicer in the summer. I can put a blanket over either one to help keep Bill warm. So I'm wondering what kind of carriers you guys use, and why? I'm planning to take my guy to the Vet very soon for a check up and want to get one of these or whatever kind you guys say is a good transporter. I have a plastic cat carrier but I think I can do a lot better then that. Thanks for you input.

Well, for years I used a hamster cage. My BFA is 35, and back then in the stone age, that's all they had. I did try the Lucite box one, but when I put him in he freaked. Threw himself against the sides trying to get out. Returned that one. I now have a cage one that folds down into a 2" wide flat box. It has a perch and cup holders and he is fine with it. We have so many cages, I sometimes lose track. I have an apartment in Astoria, Queens and a house in Long Island. Each one has a cage. Then, in the house we have a large play stand. Then there is the cage we use to board at the vet's. Oiy, what a mess.

I wish I could use the backpack one, but I think Sam would be afraid of it. I may try one, but at $235 I don't want to make a mistake.

I use a metal cage from Prevue Hendrix----It is kind of boring, but it collapses flat and I can attach her food dishes etc in there. I am not IN LOVE with it, but she likes it better than the "upgrade" I got her which she will not touch. Plus the whole thing can be washed with F10 disinfectant, as it is metal and it dries fast.

I have wondered about the backpacks too, but the thing that I question is A) how to wash out poop...or spilled food etc....If the bag is moved and there is water in there and food on the ground, then does it just all pool and get soggy? Also, how do you clean the cloth outer (because if you go out in the world to a place with other birds, there are certain nasty things you don't want to bring home on the outside of the bag).


If I could try one for free, I might consider that kind of investment, but I am not brave enough at this point.

I use a small Finch ? Cage as my travel vet and sunbathing cage. I would love one of those clear acrlic ones tho, but wonder if they would scratch scruff up after awhile, abd for Florida doesn't look like enough air movement. The back packs I can't tell, but I would like to be able to see the bird better, so for now my metal cage seems fine.

Well I have the acrylic one - it’s okay, but nothing to write home about. I find it a bit awkward to carry around for any distance but for running to the vet and back it’s fine. I replaced the cheap plastic perch with a short rope one and it works better. It wasn’t fun to assemble, but does the job.

I have a couple of aluminum ones from King’s cage which I really like (very lightweight, better airflow for the birds, easy assembly/disassembly, super easy to clean). Again, good for going to the vet, sitting outside, and transporting in the car.

I will probably purchase one of the backpacks as well, as I have at least one bird that enjoys going outside with me and I’d like something that’s easier to carry so that she can go places with me.

I think it somewhat depends on what you want it for. I have 5 birds, but will probably only get one backpack because I think it will be mostly used for going out for walks and some of my birds will not enjoy that. The rest of my travel cages are just utilitarian - occasions that they need to leave the house to go from point A to point B.
