Hi everyone,
We took Booby to his first avain vet visit today. Got the DNA test done(The vet said they used one of his feathers?) Beak and claws trimmed. A whooping $266 bucks! Omg

But they said Booby is in good health so im happy
Will find out next week what the sex of the bird is...im so excited

Also got Booby some Harrison's pellets. Lets see how he takes to that. :rainbow1:

Yay! Yes-- birds are expensive!!
Any guesses on gender?

OMG lol that's cheaper than I ever get out of there with.

I'm not a big fan of vets who always want to do beak trims, 95% or higher? Never need a beak trim. A beak trim in my own personal opinion , can easily throw off the natural shape of the beak leading to more beak trims being needed until it becomes a routine thing you have go do....money and visits for vets? Just a fad ? I don't know....but most parrots keep the beak in great shape as long as they have access to different things to chew..

Happy healthy.
I'm guessing girl :)

As so well stated above, Beak trimming is commonly not needed.

We Beak trim extensively as we have found that muted Beak ends vastly reduces skin damage with our plucker. If he didn't pluck, we would not Beak trim at all.

We often do gender polls, you can start a new thread include picture of Booby, and make a poll. Then we all vote our guess...

So what harm does minor beak trimming do then?

Archie had a hair of his beak snipped off when I clipped him, although they didn’t ASK me. I was waiting in the car during a Covid visit!

That can happen sometimes - Salty split the very tip of his beak once, and it looked like a hair sticking down. Thats the only time his beak has been trimmed.

Beak trimming can mess up a bird whose beak is normal but some really do need it. Mine, for instance, has scissor beak which could have been genetic or due to improper weaning. Either way, no matter how much she chews, one side wears down faster than the other, so she ends up looking like a cockeyed bulldog and it can mess with their jaw, sinuses etc. SOOOO trimming when not needed is silly and can mess up a fine beak, but even a healthy bird with what is basically an over or underbite etc can need regular trims...

An unneeded beak trim is like filing someone's teeth I guess....It's aesthetic and doesn't do much for them and could mess up their teeth long term.

A NEEDED beak trim is important b/c the longer you wait (when needed) the more the blood enters the beak and then it can get to a point where it cant be cut where it needs to be without causing them to bleed.
