We're picking up our new macaw at the airport later today :) I'm so tired from working on the enclosure late last night, we never thought this would happen so soon. I thought we'd be waiting for awhile for the baby to be weaned or there would be some hold up to delay when we'd actually get it in. I guess that's what we get for procrastinating. We've worked on our house for so long that we're getting burnt out on building anything. The enclosure was harder than I thought, took quite awhile to make. We dallied around and didn't finish it. And then when I noticed macaws were selling out like hot cakes at M & D (the majority of their macaws are sold out right now), I panicked and called them to see how many greenwings were still available. Only three left. It's tax return time so I figured other people might be buying them up while they had extra money. So even though we weren't done I figured I had better get one ordered before they were gone. I was shocked when she said it would be here in three days, completely taken by surprise. There was nothing to do but work frantically to get the enclosure done. All we have left on the inside is attaching the wooden and calcium perches to the pvc posts. Our local pet store is getting in a big pallet of manzanita branches later this month so we're using pvc posts with perches on them for now until that comes in. After we pick her up my husband will have to install the perches as fast as possible so she can go into her new home. We ran out of time last night, he had to go to bed and get up early for work this morning. So I'm hoping that won't take very long. I wish we hadn't messed around and got that thing done now :( Glad I bought that table top perch, because she's going to have to sit on it for an hour after we get home while we finish her stand. Poor bird, sheesh. At least she'll have plenty of room to move around when it is done though. It's double the size of a standard cage which will be nice for her. Lots of room for toys and climbing stuff. I never did get those bells off the toys either, I'll have to get Hubbs to do that as well. One night with them won't hurt anything will it? There's so much to do and so little time now. I'm leaving in two hours, it's an hour drive to the airport. I'll post pictures when we get back. I'm so nervous about how she'll act towards us, wondering if she'll go on the attack after such a big and scary change. I doubt she's ever left the pet store in her life. To go from all she's known to being shoved in a carrier and loaded onto a plane? To come into our more quiet slow paced home without all the noise and people in and out? Big changes, scary stuff. I hope she doesn't flip out on me!

Congratulations! How exciting! I hope your new love has a safe trip home! Looking forward to hearing the details and seeing the photos! Good Luck and have fun!

It doesn't surprise me their macaws were almost gone... They're very popular! At least you got the enclosure done, although at first she might not necessarily want to do much.

Don't worry about the shipping :). I can see it's natural for you to be apprehensive since you've never done it, but thousands get shipped across the country every day with no problem. Places like M&D, experienced breeders, and Delta airlines pet services have done it routinely for many years and know exactly how to do it. Besides, if parrots didn't ship well, they'd have stopped doing it long ago.

Most will just stand there when you open the carrier door. Let them come out as they want. They might waddle out right away, or it might take much time. Even though Raven isn't an extrovert, he came out quickly, ate from my hand, and played with a foot toy right away. I don't recall how others I'd had shipped reacted, but it was nothing "memorable" lol, they all walked out of the carrier sooner or later! With your baby it'll be fine. I am sure :).

Sorry guys, we were so tired last night and so was she. She could barely keep her eyes open after the initial get out of the crate part. She's nippy right now, doesn't want us to touch her. She was highly stressed, exhausted. The paperwork on the crate said she had been in the crate since 6:30 in the morning which would have been 5:30 our time, and she didn't get out of it until nearly 6 pm. We let her chill for an hour, I rolled the play gym on wheels over to the ottoman where her crate was sitting and she climbed onto it with some coaxing. After she got up there she nibbled a little and fell fast asleep on the perch. We left her there for awhile. We decided the best thing to do was open the enclosure doors wide up and roll her over to to it and put the whole playstand inside the enclosure for the night. She did not want to be touched, she was too tired and agitated. So she is too high up on that stand and close to the hanging toys and she was scared of them at first. She eyed them like they were flying saucers out to get her for awhile before nibbling on a few things and testing them with her beak. It didn't look like there was much in her cage at the pet store, maybe a toy or two. So I think she was overwhelmed by the stuff all around her. After awhile she settled down and turned her beak into her back and fell asleep again. This morning she is messing with the stuff in the enclosure and still a little confused looking. I keep handing her shelled nuts and she likes them a lot. Pictures(sorry it was dark in there):

These photos are shot through the plexiglass door so a bit distorted:

So that's it so far. She's good, just tired and afraid of us right now. That will get better in time. It took me two weeks before Tazzy was climbing all over me and chirping for me to come get him if I left the room.

When my son walked in after he got off work he stood with his mouth hanging open as he looked at her on the playstand. He said "Oh my gosh, I love you. Please love me back! I want to hug that bird Mom!" It was so cute :)

Thanks :) It was hard work, lots of plexiglass and tiling. It's a little over 80 inches wide and tall. I just wanted it to be a happy place for her, room to move and play and pretty things to look at. I don't have a light on it yet. I have the light but we need to attach a block of wood on the top of the cage to clip it to so there is no access to it or the cord through the top of the cage. I don't want her messing with it so we'll fix that tonight. We have pvc posts with perches on them to put in the bottom, but seeing how she didn't want to be touched it was easier to put the whole play stand in the enclosure for the night instead. She's up in the pvc atom right now, eating shelled nuts which seems to be all she wants right now. I handed her a piece of broccoli and she literally spit it out and shook her head like "Eeewww!" Not a good sign. I really want her to eat her greens.

Oh and, yeah we named her Sailor. We love the ocean :)

This is a terrible glarey photo because I have a large window with a ton of light coming in right next to this, but this one has her sitting in her atom eating a nut. Sorry, I'm like one of those new parents who takes a photo of every little thing until the constant photo stream gets annoying :)

On a side note, Tazzy my green cheek is acting ridiculous today now that he sees Sailor. He's freaking out, bouncing, hollering at her and me, and refuses to be put down. He's nippy, agitated and driving me batty! What's with this? Territorial aggression? Jealousy? I don't know but he's being a total pain in the butt. He won't get off me, he's preening viciously in an agitated way. He just gave my hair a yank. Very riled up, he can't calm down. Sheesh.

Sailor is stunning! And I am drooling over that enclosure, Sailor sure hot the jackpot with you:) I agree with Wendy, please keep the pictures coming!

AWW shes beautiful!! What a lovely cage as well!

Mom! There's a big scarey new bird in the house... !!!

He'll calm down once he realizes the new bird is not displacing him, and is not going to eat him.

And your GW is beautiful. The enclosure really did turn out very nice...

I'm sure Sailer will be a lap bird in no time...

Welcome to the wonderful world of greenwings!

Sailor I love the name. I live on the Innerbanks of North Carolina love the ocean.
That is a great set up you have !. I agree keep the pic's coming and congratulations to Sailor
