Jasper- lutino Indian Ringneck. And these guys aren't birds but we also have Daphne- cocker spaniel, Lilly- Great Dane/great Pyrenees, and Domino- Maine Coon cat
I'm officially adopting my Indian Ringneck today! I should have him home by 4 PM at the latest. I have to get some car repairs done, then it's a three hour round trip to pick him up.

Hope all goes well on your journey today!

Well, we are home. The car repairs didn't take as long as I thought they would. This bird is something else. He talks... A LOT. He spent the first half of the ride home throwing seed at me (switching him to pellets soon as he will let me) and calling me bad names. Then, when his food ran out he started yelling "feed me pretty lady". This is his fourth new home.... his cage has ONE perch and ONE toy. That's it. And they said they haven't taken him out of his cage in a couple months because they don't have time. For today I am just going to leave him be, but I'm going to try to slowly add another perch and toy tomorrow, and just take it slow. I've got his cage on my computer desk for now. We are getting a new one next week, it's on a stand with wheels and pretty big. Do you think just leaving his cage as is for today is a good idea? He's pretty temperamental right now and has only been home for about thirty minutes. Soon as I find my batteries for my digital camera I'll get some pictures. The one in my avatar is him though.

Sounds like your doing everything right so far, especially the "taking it slow" part, can't wait to see the new pics, keep it on the slow and easy path and you should be just fine, remember the forum and its members are always here to support you :)

Hello welcome to the new bird, and what is your name?
Glad the journey went well, besides the bad names, well you can't blame the bird.
How sad, to have him sitting in a cage for so many months, with one perch and one toy, not having time for him,
Leaving him in his cage is a great idea, something he is familiar with. Just see the world through his eyes at the moment, so much going on, new place, new people.
Take things slowly, let him gain your trust.
Love you avatar, waiting for more !!!

My name is Kelly. The bird will either be Jasper or Alice as soon as I figure out if it's most likely a he or a she. Is there a definite way to tell by their markings with IRNs? s/he is solid yellow, with a rosie-pink ring around its neck. No other markings besides the ring though. He seems pretty outgoing. I went ahead and added two other perches- a stick-shaped perch and a rope perch. and I put one more small toy in there with him. He started climbing around and playing with his new toy immediately.

He took some millet from my hand (through the bars, he bites when I get too close to him while in the cage) I gave him some more seed because he threw all of his at me on the way home :/ I thought about mixing some pellets in with it, but For today I want to keep it as normal as possible. Are IRNs known for plucking at all? When he spread his wings, it looked like he had a bald patch on his back but I only saw it for a second. He talks A LOT. Right now he's saying "pretty bird" and "roll tide" (alabama football phrase for those of you who aren't familiar with American college football). He says Hello, and good bye, I'm hungry, he squeaks and wolf-whistles and beeps like a microwave. Right now he is in the corner of his cage closest to me (I set it up on the computer desk since I spend a lot of time here due to work) and he's calling me pretty lady. Well, he must just be saying pretty lady just because he feels like it, but I'm choosing to believe that he thinks I'm pretty even if he did try to eat me last time my hand got to close to him :)

Kelly, Judging from the pic in your avatar, if thats the same bird in question, I'd say male from the pronounced ring on the neck, in females if there is a ring at all it would be very faint, I'll wait till you post pics for a better look at the ring :)

That's what I'm thinking. The ring is VERY pronounced. That is him in my avatar :) I need to get some better pictures of him though. I thought I had batteries at home for my camera but I think I must have used all of them. So I will get more tomorrow. He seems pretty friendly considering what I was expecting. He's bitten me a couple of times but never hard, just nips. He shared my banana with me and he told my cocker spaniel she was a bad dog when she tried to get a better look at him, and when my Pyrenees barked at him he barked right back LOL. Sent my 65 lb puppy RUNNING lolol. I didn't realize IRNs were such good talkers, he hasn't shut up once since he got home LOL.

Kelly, would it be ok if I post a vid of a talking ringneck in your thread here?, I promise you'll love it :)

"weeeeee!"

PeeeEeeEeeEeeek a Booo!, my favorite youtube bird video by far :09:

Definatly male
his colouring is what's classed as lutino which is basicuallh formed from breeding lack of colour birds ( although that's along time ago ) now days they are just breed lutino to lutino
anyways because of this lack of pigment / colouring they do not develop the black in their rings the same way that the standard greens do

He sure is stunning though and a great vocab by the sounds
good luck and just take it easy

I love that video! Quick question- I was told that he was barely a year old... since his ring is so pronounced though could he be older than a year?

And- what does it mean when his eyes dialate rapidly? He does it whenever I walk by his cage- He snapped at me when I offered him a treat but then squawked when I started to leave and he took the treat from me.

I'm no expert on IRN's, but if I remember correctly it can be between 1-2 1/2 years for the ring to fully develope but on average about 1 1/2, so its hard to say :)

It usually starts to develop around 18 months so I'm guessing he is closer to 2 than 1 if not older especially what the vocab he has and having already had 4 homes
they usually start to talk at 1 or older
he sounds wonderful though so I wouldn't worry to much about his age
eyes dilating can be fear and threat behaviour or extreme excitedness
in the case he did it in I'm guessing you just moved a little to fast around him and he got spooked
do a google search for indianringneck forums
there is one that's not to bad although the members can be a but slow at their replies
feel free to pm me and I'll advise in what I can
I have had ringnecks and moustaches in past and am shortly going to be owned by a alexandrine so I'll help with what I can
