Three days in!

Hello, I am so excited to say I am a new Mom to a female Eclectus. This is the first parrot our family has owned. We got her Friday and she was 31 days old. The breeder was wonderful and even hand delivered her to my home to show me everything. The only thing that keeps me worried is the breeder said she should not be spitting up at all and she has been. Is formula too thick, too thin, too much, warm enough?!? I am so worried:31: I am going to add some apple cider vinegar in a couple feedings to try to help per the breeder. Her name is Maya and she is so sweet, loves to be held, take naps on us and talks to us when we talk to her! I'm praying we do all right and no major mistakes I am keeping her set up on a heating pad so she is warm. Looking forward to getting to know others on this forum and will post pics soon.

You do realize that Maya is fine in temps that are comfortable to you and really doesn't need a heating pad...actually, she'll be comfortable when you get a chill, because she's got layered feathers that she can raise & create thermal insulating layers.....

The spitting up might just be stress from her change in environment and flock members.....everything she knows just all changed.....some birds even regress back to hand feeding from formula.....that might be why your breeder delivered her...to lessen the stress factor.....

Before you start second guessing yourself, get your breeder's take on the situation.....maybe one of the out-of-the-box eekie owners will jump in here & offer their thoughts.....

Is the breeder open to taking the baby back until she is weaned? If you do some searches on this and other websites you will see that it is really not recommended that novices buy unweaned babies. Perhaps the breeder would take her back and you could go visit her there until she is fully weaned?

Good luck with your baby - a female eclectus was the first parrot I fell in love with so long ago! Now I have 3 of them!

No she should not be spitting up! Eclectus are one of the hardest babies to hand feed and wean! Have you ever hand fed? What temp are you keeping her at? How feathered is she? Pics would help. What temp are you feeding her formula? Are you using a syringe or spoon? Are you using the microwave to heat the food?

I DO mean to alarm you, if you are not experienced there are plenty of really horrible deaths that your baby could suffer because the breeder was greedy and only cared about the money! I want to help for the sake of this baby so please answer all the questions okay.

Thank you for your reply Sonja. My breeder probably would take her back, she is wonderful. But, I do want to do this and I work from home so I have the time. I am ecstatic with our choice in breeder and the eclectus. Every question I have had she responds back to me and also told me how urgent it is that I don't over feed her, over heat the food, etc. I guess I am just nervous and appreciate any comments or advise that I can get from eclectus owners out there

Iabell, thank you for your response too! I did do a lot of research but yes I am new at this. The breeder did get her money but she has not disappeared and is texting me every time I text her I really wanted to do this and I have the time to be with her. She is in a clear box with holes in the lid and a thick layer of shredded paper along with a cozy teddy bear. The box sits on top of the heating pad on low all the time. When I feed her the water to start is never higher than 115 and of course it cools down before I feed her. I make it to applesauce consistency. I'm using a syringe. My first feeding she took 20ml and got sick a little so the breeder told me her sister is only taking 10-15ml and she is bigger. She explained that they will eat until they get sick or worse! Poor girl was just eating so good. I am now doing 4 feedings instead of 3 and only feeding 10ml's. I will weight her tomorrow to see how her weight is and try to post some pictures. She is starting to get really fuzzy and a few feathers coming in ADORABLE! Thanks again for your help and sorry to make my breeder out to be the bad guy.
