When it comes to bedtime for your Ekkie, does the tv effect them? if they are covered up in a black cover. As I live in a bunglowe the cage thanks to you guys on here as I listened to you on which size cage to buy wont fit through doors so cant be moved lol. I use to cover Jake up my Quaker about 7.30pm and it never effected him I dont think. Although obviously I cant be certain as he wasnt exactly able to say hay now then turn tv off I am trying to sleep lol.

My Parker is up with us until 11pm, and is usually woken up at 8am before we leave for work. He's perfectly fine with this.

oh thats ok then you just see that they need 12 hour sleep obviously not all do then.

This is more out of necessity. We work typical 9-5, which means out of the house by 8 and home by often 7. So observing the 12 hour rule means he only gets less than an hour a day of out of cage time before being put back to bed

The twelve hour rule is a requirement (must) when one's parrot has become aggressive and/or other behavioral problems are presenting, and the goal is getting the parrot back from the edge.

Commonly, today's homes are near 24 hour active. And, that is where it becomes a problem. You need to monitor your home's active hours. And yes, TV 'ON' is part of the measurement, unless your using ear bugs and the cage cover is a true black-out cover.

Most homes are nearer to four hours of true sleep than someplace North of eight hours, let alone ten or twelve. According to most studies, us Humans are averaging less than six and a half hours of sleep. So, the average Human is sleep deprived. We tend to fall asleep while drive where our parrots only take large bits out of us.

Regarding the cage. Unless you have a cage body that has a depth greater than 26" it should roll though most doorways. Some cages have 'Seed Catchers' that are removable that will allow them roll though a doorway once removed.

We're an up late and more active household as well. I cover Dexter around 10pm, but he's in the room next door to the family room and sometimes I can hear him quietly chattering after he's been covered if I'm watching TV or even reading with the lights on. The household is up and active between 6:30 and 7:00 and he's usually awake and chattering before he's uncovered when we first come downstairs. There is a period of quiet in the middle of the day when he can catch up on any lost sleep by napping as needed. I don't think he's short on sleep at all.

Is there a period of quiet during the day when your ekkie can catch a birdie-nap?

We usually go to bed between 9 and 10, and there are some mornings when we are up at 4 if we both have to work. If I had to observe the 12 hour rule, there are days that the pretty chicken wouldn't get any out of cage time. She doesn't seem to have any issues with it, although I'm sure on the really early rising days, she takes a good nap while we are at work.

Thanks for all your replies I was thinking this 12 hour sleep is never going to happen so thanks for your examples etc. Atleast i dont have to worry unless i get a stroppy Jasper once i get him into a rutine.
